What Does Your Varsity Charge for Internet?

UJ (University of Johannesburg) - Free and fast.
Downloaded the 1.2 Gb photoshop set up file in 15 minutes flat.

UCT is free and fast. but with a 3gb monthly cap. BUt apparently the cost is absorbed into the fees.

On the other hand its so fast you can watch streaming 720p youtube videos without buffering, but then your cap flies out of the window

NMMU - no charge, but can't download, 99% of direct download sites blocked, no torrents, no nzb!

Wow, that's nothing for the speed you getting and the uncapped portion of it as well :)

UKZN we even get Microsoft Office for free from the ICT data repository.

Is that Office with a CD Key Pooky? I've seen it there but haven't bothered to download it.

Maaties decision to implement a particular way of dealing with the problem of scarcity was borne out of a particular ideology and entrenched that approach, it also has long term financial implications. By charging on a per megabyte basis all of the planning for internet provisioning was cast in that mould.

Thanks for the trip down memory lane Paul :) I agree the thinking of Stellenbosch is outdated in the current climate. It is the function of the university to do academic work and to this end should be providing a reasonable amount of data for free to be included as part of the fees paid annually. It is interesting though to note the RU has registered with ISPA, which doesn't gel with me (and I'm not quite sure why).

So, all in, I feel Stellenbosch is fleecing its students by charging a per MB rate. Also, IMO the quality of the networking systems here blows.

What are you on about? When I was post grad we got free internet our labs for academic work. And I don't know what you were studying but I didn't use my inetkey once for normal academic work. You can access most journals free of charge through the library portal etc. I only used the internet for my 3rd and 4th year projects.

The university isn't fleecing you, it is you that want to fleece the university (don't kid me, I was also a student and I know what I wanted ;)). I know we had other means to get "distros" and I don't know the situation there now, but internet was really fast when I wanted to use it. And the university doesn't want illegal things being downloaded over their internet as they can be held liable. There were many people playing online gaming and their bills were never high.

This facility was suspended from July 1st

I'm doing remote sensing, last month alone I had to download 4.8GB of satellite imagery. My bill was just under R230. So, whilst there may be other students looking to download series and other material on the university network, my needs are different. I believe the other uni's have a better system where torrent, NNTP etc. are throttled and you don't pay a cent.

Sorry to hear, but couldn't you download it over the departmental proxy? I think you should ask them when you have to do another download.

Most students I've met have huge libraries of movies, series and music... downloaded via their campus networks...

How would one go about downloading say an open source movie from behind a university proxy? Just for curiosity sake :)

UKZN VPN doesn't seem to work.

I have tried everything to get Minecraft online to work at university.

Find it funny that Maties charges their students for use of the internet when they are in partnership with the municipality and Mxit for the free wifi, and it just happens to be out of range of the Res's  I was visiting Academia and they are hooked up to the universities network, tried to use my laptop but couldn't figure out how to get to the login page, as nothing would load. Please someone PM me how to setup a new computer for their students network, as I may be sending a new one down to a student if his laptop finally packs up :erm:
