UJ (University of Johannesburg) - Free and fast.
Downloaded the 1.2 Gb photoshop set up file in 15 minutes flat.
I left Tuks in 09. They still had it.
Maaties decision to implement a particular way of dealing with the problem of scarcity was borne out of a particular ideology and entrenched that approach, it also has long term financial implications. By charging on a per megabyte basis all of the planning for internet provisioning was cast in that mould.
Is that Office with a CD Key Pooky? I've seen it there but haven't bothered to download it.
Thanks for the trip down memory lane PaulI agree the thinking of Stellenbosch is outdated in the current climate. It is the function of the university to do academic work and to this end should be providing a reasonable amount of data for free to be included as part of the fees paid annually. It is interesting though to note the RU has registered with ISPA, which doesn't gel with me (and I'm not quite sure why).
So, all in, I feel Stellenbosch is fleecing its students by charging a per MB rate. Also, IMO the quality of the networking systems here blows.
What are you on about? When I was post grad we got free internet our labs for academic work. And I don't know what you were studying but I didn't use my inetkey once for normal academic work. You can access most journals free of charge through the library portal etc. I only used the internet for my 3rd and 4th year projects.
The university isn't fleecing you, it is you that want to fleece the university (don't kid me, I was also a student and I know what I wanted). I know we had other means to get "distros" and I don't know the situation there now, but internet was really fast when I wanted to use it. And the university doesn't want illegal things being downloaded over their internet as they can be held liable. There were many people playing online gaming and their bills were never high.
I'm doing remote sensing, last month alone I had to download 4.8GB of satellite imagery. My bill was just under R230. So, whilst there may be other students looking to download series and other material on the university network, my needs are different. I believe the other uni's have a better system where torrent, NNTP etc. are throttled and you don't pay a cent.
How would one go about downloading say an open source movie from behind a university proxy? Just for curiosity sake![]()
