Since there are some nice specials running on these babies and because my mom is supposedly  getting some kind of Subsidy from the Department of Education for a Laptop sometime next year, we have decided now is the time to get one. Looking at any type of small & mobile PC that is < R3000.

First on the list is the ASUS EEE PC 701-CW Black or White - [701CW]
R2,598.99 Incl. VAT from Itai. Looks like a good deal:

ASUS® EEE PC 701-CW - Intel® 900Mhz Celeron®M ULV, 512MB DDR2 Memory, Internal 4GB SSD Based Hard Drive, Intel® 910GML Chipset, 7" 800x480 LCD, 10/100 LAN, WiFi b/g, SD Card Slot, 3xUSB 2.0, 0.3MP Webcam, VGA Out, Mic & Headphone, 3.5Hr Batt Life, 890g Only. Software: Windows XP Home Live Edition, Microsoft Works 9.0

Then I'll just get a 4GB SDHC card to supplement the limited SSD. Also have to decide Black vs White?

Then Kalahari has the Linux one on special, Asus EEE PC 700-W, for R2100 with free delivery. But then I'll have to get XP on the small little 2GB SSD in some way, after I got my hands on a $$$ XP DSP copy. So this option does not look that inviting.

Some PC Discount Online shop has one of these for cheaper, but I trust Itai/Kalahari more.

Any other options that someone would like to recommend? Anyone had any problems with their EEE PC's? Tips/Tricks, Comments, Linux/Windows Bashing, anything welcome! Thx

Itai's deal is good, provided his supplier (Rectron) in Jo'burg carries stock of that model (or if Itai himself has it in stock). It's been removed from that suppliers' Cape Town pricelist. :(

:( *me gets out credit card*

Might be too late already ...

Cannot get Itai on Skype though, need to confirm a minor detail before I can buy.

Good luck. :)

Thanks. I'm still sitting here. Waiting for Itai to get back in office. But I know why he ain't in office at the moment, so I'm happy to wait. Either way, buying it now with a credit card, before he gets back, in no way means that there is still stock at his suppliers - patience patience patience :(

He he ... well you got your answer now ;) ... confirmed stock with my supplier and he still has 100 on stock ... but not sure how much of each colour.

edit: A week ago there was over 500 so if anyone else wants one, move quick.

Yay!

Just ordered the special at Digital Addiction - seems like there were still stock available in JHB*. Now Itai just need to do his magic. Can't wait! :D

Edit: *Should have hit F5 before posting

I wonder how good this courier, Icon Couriers, Itai used is. Never heard of them before.
~10 minutes left of this day for them to deliver. Else I'll hopefully get it tomorrow.

Never heard of them, but let us know how they are.

Hi. They said they will be delivering tomorrow. They usually very good with me. Used to use Berco, and a few times they "forgot" to collect

There are some basic stuff they need to sort out imo. They eg. have no active web presence http://www.iconcouriers.co.za/ so one have to phone them to track your package or basically any other query you might have. But they are quite friendly on the phone and always eager to help.

Yep, don't you worry - I know where my package is. It is en route to CT still, should be here in about 4 hours. Then I should get it tomorrow sometime. Just enough time to download some stuff for the thing.

Cool. How are you enjoying it? :D

Did not enjoy it at first, the thing was heck slow. Was about to declare the thing DOA. But that was just the first boot with widows setting itself up etc etc. Now it flies, everything works as it should. Thx Itai! Icon Couriers did their Job just fine. Even without a GPS, so they had to call me for directions.

But now I'm struggling to get the thing online via bluetooth/cable with my Motorola V360 using GPRS. It connects, verifies the username + pass, registers me on the network or something and then Bam, ERROR 619. :( But it does that on all my PCs so I want to blame Vodacom for this.
