Even in early agriculture there was likely some degree of selective breeding (plant the seeds of that big one!). Agriculture, climate change, animals, erosion etc. all contribute to adaptation or changes in successive generations. I think that's partly what BCO is getting at: That humans and their selective breeding of plants are as much a part of the natural process as any other environmental factor.
