Hey all, So I have been out of the professional scene for about 3 years now and I was wondering what games are the best to pick up in South Africa. Also, what games you think will pick up in terms of competitive play :D Thanks for all the comments that are coming my way ;)

What @throwaway420 said.

And if you're willing to move to Europe or South Korea, Starcraft II.

Enlighten me, why if he is willing to relocate to those places (I've never played SC2)? Sounds really intense - relocating for gaming. I would like to meet someone who has done that! :p

Currently the largest leagues would be WCS and ESL Code S.

WCS has EU and US leagues - however the caliber of EU players (with many Koreans having migrated there) is higher than the US's.

ESL Code S is the premier league in South Korea. They also have Code A etc which is the qualifier for Code S participation.

The top players from WCS and ESL Code S then also compete in multiple Dream Hack, IEM competitions for points to qualify for the Blizzard world champs. $250 000 to the winner.

Reason I say those countries is because the support for this game is huge there. Professional teams, living together in play houses with managers, trainers and dietitians etc. It's pretty damn huge.

The above is quick and off the cuff :D

As for people that have moved...there are a few pro SC players that have moved from EU to S.K and vice versa. Even some of those that have moved to US - where they simply destroy the competition. The South Koreans are generally accepted as the best SCII players in the world. They also more often than not define the meta game with new strats and build orders.

So sc2 inho is one of the hardest games to play professionally, you have to average +200 apm. And there is a large amount of build orders and strategies you have to take heed of. So why move overseas. There is a small community of serious sc2 players in sa but you want to join a "training house" where you live and play for a living, msotly streaming for cash in the early times and join as many tournaments as possible. You will have to be in europe, america or asia to be competitive because the money is in tournaments and most tournaments require you to visit the locations etc. There is online tournaments but with lower payouts.

TL; DR
Tournaments require locallity,
gaming houses for training and tips,
small local community.

I haven't played since Brood War.

I actually picked up SCII WoL and HotS last week only

Since Legacy is coming (hopefully) in November I felt the need to get back to playing. Still follow the game and top players a bit. Looking forward to the meta eco changes that Legacy is bringing.

Apologies for thread derail OP

Odds of anyone making it pro if it hasn't been something they've been doing consistently for the last decade or more, is next to none :P

But my vote goes to CSGO and Dota 2
