Ok, there are people I've spoken to who deal with telkom on an ISP level who seem to think that, come the new billing system, telkom are going to force us back onto 3 gig accounts (with similar pricing to the current 3 gig accounts).

I, for one, can't go back to 3 gigs. At bare minimum, I need 8 - 9 gigs to be comfortable. My question is this: Should telkom go this route, is there anything that can be done for force them to.. reconsider?

Any thoughts?
 
highly unlikely - as i understand it you will be able to buy per gig after the cap....mooted cost of R60 per gig
 
As far as I understand they're moving toward a pay-per-gig system. So you'll be able to use as much as you want, but you'll pay for each gigabyte. This will probably mean an increase in bandwidth prices, which is why many ISP's say that their prices will probably change come October.
 
So if we do the maths, a roughly standard 3 gig account will cost you around R200.. for the average 10 gig user like myself, we're looking at R60 * 7 = R420, so a grand total of 620 for 10 gigs, plus R479 for my 512k like, and you have a total of R1099 for a 10 gig 512 ADSL line.

Doesn't look very promising..

source within telkom...don't take it as gospel but it is the figure being mentioned at the moment
 
Does this structure apply to everybody (Axxess, web africa, TelkomISP) or just telkom ISP>>?
 
Then we have to kill Telkom.

*In todays headlines Adsl user goes on shooting spree at head Telkom offices,he said nobody but nobody is taking his 30gb cap away*

I might aswell wait and see what the soulless Telkom does.

Like I said elsewhere in another thread, R349/30Gb = R11.63/Gb. If the Gb rate in terms of the new billing model exceeds this, Telkrap had better prepare themselves for a reaction that they never imagined could ever happen - anti-apartheid struggles and de Kok's crap will seem tame compared to what will happen, and no amount of legal niceties, marketing BS or regulatory fancy footwork will fix it. Telkrap, be warned...
 
If we take the average price of 30GB @ R349 = R11.63 per GB. If Telkom do start charging a lot more per GB, we can have a great deal of fun in the press. Imagine the headline: "Telkom increases ADSL prices by 300-400%" This will make the press releases about a 31% decrease in ADSL charges look like an April fools joke.

We can also go the ICASA route again. If we stick together I do believe we can kick up a big stink. Telkom had better tread very carefully around their decisions to increase prices. They can't give you something for R11.63 and then increase the charge to R50.

I really look forward to seeing what they have in mind.
