Something I never even considered was asked at the latest Linuxcon, and I must say the prospects are scary.

The question, what if Linus was removed from the project? Would Linux (aka the kernel) survive?

Seems even he is not sure:
On a more serious note, Torvalds noted that if he were to unexpectedly be removed from his life as a kernel developer, he believes the biggest problem would be politicking among some kernel developers.

Torvalds said that people are used to the fact that he's hard to push around.

Interesting read.

What stops him from establishing a dictatorial chain of succession? Kinda like royalty? :D

I do believe that Open Source will soldier on, but I doubt it would be as efficient as it is now. The infighting will be the main thing keeping the project back.

Can you imagine someone like Stallman taking over the lead on the kernel????

I think I just died a little inside...

Would the big distro's like Ubuntu and Linux Mint not simply perhaps do their own development on the existing kernel and take it into the future?

With out Ubuntu and other distros, Mac and MS will run out of inspiration \o/.
