Went out my back door to find the ground littered with these. I've never seen them before? They look like the spawn of a prawn and a flea, and google didn't turn anything up. The largest was about a cm long. Anyone have any ideas?

Lawn Shrimp or House Hopper, a terrestrial Amphipod that is native to Australia, but which has been introduced to other regions including South Africa, New Zealand, Florida and California.

They can become quite plentiful in cultivated gardens where they go unnoticed, but after a heavy rain, they seek dry shelter, often indoors, where they promptly die and come to the attention of the human residents.

Though they are a nuisance when they enter the home, they are basically a benign species.

Thank you so much!! Also explains why they were hanging around by our door x

Amphipods, like all crustaceans, are best served with a peri-peri basting.

luckily I'm in Durban like the OP... just not sure how to attract these tasty creatures to come out at my place

I don't understand you people, if you see something walking around you want to eat it...
