Are you sure that it is not some kind of retractable USB connector?

It does retract, but got two copper connections. So I suppose it needs to be in the body to "complete the circuit".

Any identifiable markings anywhere besides hp 8gb?

Got it working, normal USB but fits very loose, have to hold it steady by hand then it picks up on the PC. Thanks for assistance.
