What is "common courtesy" really between neighbors?

Be nice. Tell him that you will inform him well in advance next time you add a room on top of your garage.

Hahaha! I actually did LOL :D

Ke?

Request the same then of the neighbours property then.

That is complete bollocks and I wouldn't play nice, he is being "nice" whilst still being a dick.

My advice: move.

If this is how he starts before he's even moved in, he's going to be an awful neighbor.

Yeah, this is now starting to concern me. He seems to be very "accommodating" as face value...but behind the scenes its painting a different picture. :wtf:

This is going to get interesting....fast...

You don't have to tell him squat as long as you don't cross the building line...
And communicating as neighbours? I am on decent enough terms with my neighbour, as in we say hi to each other and whatever, but beyond that there is no communication.

Exactly as god intended neighbors to be. Out of sight, out of mind. :D

I don't even know my neighbours name, no intention of finding out. Beyond the required nod if you see them outside, I don't care.

He sounds like a neighbour that will be a nuisance.. so good luck!

+1. Tell him too fcku off now, before he becomes more annoying or god forbid tries to be your friend. Nevermind, this guy is going to be an assho

Yeah, the face value and actions behind the scenes are massively contradictory.

I would honestly request EXACTLY the same investigation and full report on his building. If he is going to try fsck you over like that, then do the same right back.

It seems you are going to have a troublesome neighbour no matter what you do. Good luck with that.

This ^^

Tell him your plans was approved a year ago and nothing he does or says will change that. Then attack him for having the audacity to send you an e-mail regarding things happening on your side of the wall. Tell him this is not how you get along with your neighbors and he needs to back off a bit if he wants a good relationship. Set the boundaries from the start. This guy is going to be a pain in the arse !

Next time he gives you grief, just send him this poem by Robert Frost.

Something there is that doesn't love a wall,
That sends the frozen-ground-swell under it,
And spills the upper boulders in the sun;
And makes gaps even two can pass abreast.
The work of hunters is another thing:
I have come after them and made repair
Where they have left not one stone on a stone,
But they would have the rabbit out of hiding,
To please the yelping dogs. The gaps I mean,
No one has seen them made or heard them made,
But at spring mending-time we find them there.
I let my neighbour know beyond the hill;
And on a day we meet to walk the line
And set the wall between us once again.
We keep the wall between us as we go.
To each the boulders that have fallen to each.
And some are loaves and some so nearly balls
We have to use a spell to make them balance:
"Stay where you are until our backs are turned!"
We wear our fingers rough with handling them.
Oh, just another kind of out-door game,
One on a side. It comes to little more:
There where it is we do not need the wall:
He is all pine and I am apple orchard.
My apple trees will never get across
And eat the cones under his pines, I tell him.
He only says, "Good fences make good neighbours."
Spring is the mischief in me, and I wonder
If I could put a notion in his head:
"Why do they make good neighbours? Isn't it
Where there are cows? But here there are no cows.
Before I built a wall I'd ask to know
What I was walling in or walling out,
And to whom I was like to give offence.
Something there is that doesn't love a wall,
That wants it down." I could say "Elves" to him,
But it's not elves exactly, and I'd rather
He said it for himself. I see him there
Bringing a stone grasped firmly by the top
In each hand, like an old-stone savage armed.
He moves in darkness as it seems to me,
Not of woods only and the shade of trees.
He will not go behind his father's saying,
And he likes having thought of it so well
He says again, "Good fences make good neighbours."

Ah, these replies are classic! :D

It basically answers my question really going back to common courtesy. At the end of the day, it's a personal thing and everyone is different. It appears he wants me to include him in everything going forward as neighbors, and I dont agree with that. My feeling is a courtesy is extended to someone if they could be inconvenienced in any way.

So yeah...going forward, I will keep him in the loop ONLY if x, y or z would be an inconvenience to him and maybe a discussion would be needed. Otherwise, it really has nothing to do with him and I dont see why I should notify him about everything.

Now to word this in a nicely toned email reply :o

To be honest, if I found out he requested a full report I would have told him to go **** himself. This guy sounds like he thinks he's the queen of england. He needs to learn that he's a plebian like the rest of us and doesn't get to lord over everyone else.

The email shows your neighbour is willing to be cooperative as opposed to a dick.

For now. The fact that he's already poking his nose so deeply where it doesn't belong before he has even moved in is a warning sign.

Busybodies do not make good neigbhors.

Yeah, it does but the fact that he has asked for a full report and our building plans for the room addition :wtf: He comes across as accommodating and cooperative...but I got given a heads up about his request via the grapevine. It kinda paints him in a different light then in my opinion...

This is my concern

Going to bet that he is worried that you building on top of the garage will either infringe on his view (as per his planned building) or his privacy.

His logic is probably that had he known you were going to do that...he would have built/planned differently.

A nice enough thought but ultimately impractical as at some point any one of his neighbours could make alterations that would negate his plans.

Also I don't think there is anything particularly wrong with him requesting a report on the whole matter.

Houses aren't cheap things and also very longterm investments.

If you are building a shanty next door, that directly affects his resale value as nobody wants to buy a house next to a shack.

Especially while he is still in the starting phase of building he has some options to make some changes accordingly. If he now decides it's a bad idea to build what he originally planned he can change it.

But it does belong there.

Your neighbours house and it's condition directly affects the value of your own.

Absolutely nothing wrong with him giving a **** about what's potting next door.

If that is the case then he could have told CrazyFig that that was his concerns and asked for the building plans directly. No need to be sly about it.

There's a right way and a wrong way to do everything.

To a degree yes,

But if the plans have been passed, and the building is completely legit according to the plans, then his nose stops belonging there.

He has no say in WHAT gets built, as long the stuff is done according to the building regs and such.

Oh completely agreed.

Doesn't sound like he wants to dictate what gets built...just that it conforms to the plans.

I mean we all know people who have built something WITHOUT PLANS...or not to the spec of the plans.

Classic passive-aggressive behaviour. People like that are high maintenance, and I'd avoid the guy. Your plans are passed, and there's nothing he can do, so just carry on regardless.
