What is embedded 3G?

I think he is talking about laptops with built in 3G cards. So you put the sim card in the laptop itself instead of using a dongle.

If that is the case then:

It's typically a mini-PCIe card installed in the laptop case with embedded antennas in the edges of the display. The sim is often installed under the battery. No need to insert a USB dongle which has a risk of damage if bumped. Convenient too.

Many thanks - yes this is exactly what I must be asking about! Sorry to be so dense, but I look forward to visiting this site regularly if everyone is so helpful. Thanks again!

Btw careful when you read the laptop specs. For example Lenovo used to include them in their Thinkpads now you have to pay extra. So "ready" is not equal to "included".

I don't believe any brands have ever included it as standard... it's usually a case of there being two versions of the same model - one with and one without embedded/built-in 3G.

Still, I would take a 3G-ready laptop to mean that there is an embedded modem, and one just needs to provide their own SIM card.
Care to show an example of exactly what you're referring to? Perhaps an advert or pricelist entry?

Still those are different models, so one can never expect the same radios, and I was hoping to see where they were labelled as 3G-ready?
