I just headed to Pingtest and just wondered what Jitter is ?

As in the time between each successful packet - if near constant or not ?

Nope - It's merely the difference in time between each successful ping test and the next. So if test 1 had a ping of 4ms, and the 2nd had a ping of 5ms, the jitter would be 1ms. If both pings were 4ms, the jitter would be 0ms.

Realise this thread is relatively dead but trying to resurrect it because i'm having some weird adsl problems and trying to find the cause. My jitter is very high . What causes high Jitter? My tracert does not seem to show any exchange congestion but i'm getting slow speeds and inconsistent throughput.

Afrihost;)

:D was hoping that was the case. Unfortunately tried a w.a. test account and signed up for a vox account yesterday as well (afrihost have 1 month grace) and still getting the same problems.

Using wifi?

Jitter

Once you understand ping, jitter should also make sense. Jitter is merely the variance in measuring successive ping tests. Zero jitter means the results were exactly the same every time, and anything above zero is the amount by which they varied. Like the other quality measurements, a lower jitter value is better. And while some jitter should be expected over the Internet, having it be a small fraction of the ping result is ideal.

Would you mind posting line stats?
Could you also try removing all phones from their wall sockets and plugging the modem directly into the wall without a filter. Then connect your laptop/desktop via an Ethernet cable and try again. Also see if you can borrow a friends modem for a day to check and posts its line stats as well.

Will need to work on getting another router to test. This is tracert without a filter and connected via ethernet.

Could you ping 192.168.1.1 instead?
