What is my Marconi?

Hi, Ive been trying to setup my "Adsl Device" under linux but first of all I dont even know what its function are:
Its the standard Telkom/Marconi 4port ethernet router. Now is it a router with a built in adsl-modem or adsl-router or something else. What is it?

When I learn what it is maybe I'll have a new understanding of what to do and I'll able to setup internet.

It is a 4 port network hub/switch, an adsl-modem and internet router build into one device.

You do not need to add it as a device in linux. Just set the adsl-modem to "auto connect", connect your linux PC with Cat5 cable to an ethernet port on the device, configure TCP in Linux with DHCP.

Your Linux box would automatically pick up IP settings from the device and configure "Default gateway, Subnet Mask, etc..."

Now whats the difference between an internet router and an adsl modem?

I thought because adsl uses a digital signal, no modulation/demodulation takes place place.Therefore it was only a router.

There is no such thing as an ADSL modem...

It is a false term used for an ADSL router...

It functions purely on IP traffic and doesn't have to be setup as a device... If you search the forum you should find all the info you need on setting it up under Linux... It has been covered by myself on this forum as well... Search...

A bit more info would be nice... what flavour of Linux etc...

When you search, try using keywords like "pppoe", "linux" and more to refine it... tons of info for you...

Antowan - I would like to see you setup a ADSL connection with just a pure router...

And please inform Wiki that there is no such thing as an ADSL modem, because they use the term "ADSL modem" quite often:

Alright, Ive setup my user name and password on my router and enabled DHCP on it (I left the host name blanck becuase I dont think i need one). Now what else do I have to do to make a connection to the internet? Im using ubantu 4.10.

I do not have that kind of router, but from basic principals it should all just work at this stage. Can you ping the router from the PC?
