Afaik it detects and downloads optimised gaming profiles for your GPU for the games on your system.
Not that I use it, but mine also used to crash when checking for updates until the latest update (last week), see if it works for you?

I've been getting the same lately, i've recently enabled the "Beta Driver" downloads as well, and it keeps crashing after downloading some percentage of the file, then i have to terminate the process and restart. I even now disabled "Beta Drivers" download, i haven't had a update to my current drivers as yet, so im not sure if this happens only with Beta drivers yet, i will only know when a new driver for my GPU is available.

I went and downloaded the update through my browser. Not going to use the auto update feature anymore.

Yeah, mine has been behaving for some time, but then again, haven't had an update for some time now.

I think... it support only the Nvidia 400 series and higher, really not sure, applicable with optimisations.
Basically it is a driver management tool.
You do know you have the option to ignore the installation of GeForce experience.
