Wouldnt ISPs still have to pay telkom for that 'free' bandwidth?

true, but then what is preventing Telkom from supplying that free bandwidth during off peak? ... even if it is just local

EDIT: sure there is some costs involved with international players with the interconnects but even for international im sure the costs can be negotiated? ... look i aint too clued up on the costing models for internet traffic, maybe someone can also explain this ... its like panarottis offering eat as much as you like Pizza on Wednesdays when they the least busiest :) ...

That is the question. Do they not pay only for interconnecting traffic? Could they not offer free local bandwidth between two of their customers?

My OpenWeb Uncapped Express 4 Mbps is unlimited after hours for R1299 a month. It is also unlimited during office hours, but it is throttled to 256k.

This is backed by Internet Solutions not Telkom.

That is uncapped, not "free local". You pay for an uncapped, no threshold account. Local is supposed to be FREE. ICASA just royally farked up on their wording in their regulations...

You can do whatever you want with that account- international or local:D

cause im pretty sure Telkom can get this to work if they bothered ... *sigh* ...

buy a 3gig shaped account and get 1gig free international unshaped usage during off peak times of 0:00AM-5:00AM !!! and unlimited free local usage during off peak ...

where did the OP say anything about "local"? He said "free bandwidth".

.. and it is not strictly "uncapped", cos it is restricted in peak hours by throttling.

What would a free bandwidth account look like and how would it be any different from this product? Or are you looking for something cheaper? That's not really realistic yet... until Seacom goes live and brings us cheaper bandwidth.

what is the difference between "uncapped" and "free bandwidth"?

Telkom's strategy is well known in the market. They will charge you for anything and everything. They are amongst the greediest people on this planet. There would have to be a serious threat to their cash cow before they would ever consider giving anything for free.
 
what i am alluding to is a capped account like the the common 3gig account and offering free bandwidth during off peak times ... certainly free local should not be an issue during this time ... its actually not costing them anything extra id think (Telkom that is) ... and id even go further to say that the interconnect with the international links can be negotiated for at worst better rates during off peak times? ...

Is it really Telkoms greed at the end of the day preventing this or are there technical and huge cost implications preventing Telkom from doing this?

EDIT: An Analogy: SAy Vodacom gives you R50 prepaid airtime, during 12AM and 3AM your phone calls are free ... so on day 1 you only make calls during this time ... you *100# and see that you still have R50 airtime left ... now i would not mind seeing a product like this for data, it is very different from your account you have Gary ... i see it as a value add on existing accounts without charging anything extra to the client ...

OK, I see what you mean. I thought you meant unlimited after hours bandwidth. Ja. it would be a nice product, but don't count on Telkom offering anything innovative!
 
Anything given for free would probably be challenged by Telkom's competitors as abuse of competitive advantage and end up at the Competition Commission again!!!
 
@ Gary. Right you are. OP wants free internet. Bit of a leap considering how far behind we are- free local would be a good start. Then there would be the seperation of local from International by ISPs... All "imminent" no doubt;)
