What is Push e-mail and how does it work?

Sorry for the noobish question, but would just like to know exactly how it works and to what you need to be connected for it to work.

Is it something you subscribe to or is it just an extra feature on the network?

Do you need to have your gprs/edge/3g on for this to work?

Push e-mail is used to describe e-mail systems that provide an "always-on" capability, in which new e-mail is instantly and actively transferred (pushed) as it arrives by the mail delivery agent (MDA) (commonly called mail server) to the mail user agent (MUA), also called the email client. Most of today's clients are smartphones.

My blackberry uses push email in a gprs connection - the monthly subscription covers the cost of the additional data.

What kind of phone do you have? If it is one that supports blackberry connect, and you're on vodacom, that might be your best option. http://www.vodacom.co.za/services/blackberry/connect_builtin_individuals.jsp

I run all my email through a gmail account (to scrub out the spam) which is autoforwarded to my blackberry email address.
