we're a 3rd world country? thats your excuse for not having good internet business? ok well you should probably know americans complain that taiwan and korea as well as other crappy countries in asia have poor people with 25mbit connections, not only did that get more people online meaning more businesses thrived but also they became a leader tech market meaning fortune 500 tech companies not only develop stuff there but also premiere it in those countries. 5 years ago these countries were worse off than us and in areas with no infrustructure they boomed with wireless connections to get everyone online. So right now thats alot of cash being brought in for thier economies and new markets springing up as well as cheaper electronic goods since they are less scarse in that market but think 5, 10, 15 years from now.. those countries are entirley computer literate, everyone there will know how to carry out tasks effectivly on computers and they will have more higher end computer users that will be involved in software engineering, reasearch and development etc which also means they will have a higher level of basic skills since you need math to do software engineering, you need to read/write in order to type and read web pages the list goes on and on.
I agree we make progress but its too little too late, WBS should have (could still be) the ones taking the next step, we coulda gone from 56k modem to crappy 512 adsl with bad cap to 1mbit with better cap leaving the next move up to someone else who wants to offer soemthign faster or cheaper or better but instead WBS didn't improve on telkom they just matched them. And it pisses me off because now I have to wait another year, 2, 3 for someone to take it a bit further.
and dont give me that 98% of african never made a phone call crap like thats an excuse. this is south africa and i dont see why we should be worse than anywhere else in the world just cuz we're in africa, just cuz some kid in asia is starving to death doesn't mean i will be happy with eating baked beans for the rest of my life, i want to evolve and end up eating caviar
you're happy because you went from 56k to 1mbit but in that same time frame the Uk went from 512 adsl to 8mbit adsl, swedes went from 1mbit to 100mbit.
One last thing competition isn't really heating up, you see uncapped services etc etc but you need to remember thats hardly competition, those companies are not in competition with telkom, they are customers of telkom, they buy the adsl and bandwith just like we do they just do it on a bigger scale get a bit of a discount and sell it to people sand then the power users go right to the limit and the casual users dont and subsadise the power users.
