It happened before but I can't remember how it was solved. It's driving me MAD.

The marconi modem is indicating there is a signal, the telkom dashboard says there is service, but when I do a ping test I get timed out.

so I look at telkoms customer self help and troubleshooting pages and select option 6. "I am unable to browse"

Step 1: Can you ping IP/URL's? This proves connectivity to a website / net destination

From a command prompt, type ping www.saix.net then type in ping 196.25.1.200.
•Click Start -> click Run -> type cmd and press (enter)•Type ping www.saix.net then wait for the Test 1 to complete.•Then type in ping 196.25.1.200. and wait for Test 2 to completeYou can consider the test successful if you have more than 2 replies (25% loss)

Step 2: Ping TEST 1 Fails but Test 2 is successful

Are the DNS / IP's / Gateways correctly setup?
DNS's should be set to be obtained automatically. However they may be changed for troubleshooting purposes.
Try the following DNS entries:
196.25.255.34196.25.255.3If specifying the DNS servers on your network card settings, it is recommended that you use the IP of your router as your default gateway"

Step 3: TEST 1 Passes
If test 1 passes, check the following steps as this means that your connection is up:
Are the proxy settings correct?(Proxy servers should generally not be specified, unless advised to do so by your ISP.)Is there any firewall that can be restricting access? While it is not recommended to turn your firewall off, check its settings to ensure that internet activity is not restricted.Refer to your Firewall;'s manual as to how best to troubleshoot it.Have you run any spy/ad/malware checks recently?Spyware and the like DO cause havoc with your PC's settings and could well be the cause of this problem

Step 4: Both Tests Fail
Ensure that you are in fact connected to your ISP.

•This can be verified in your router (Check your manual)

OR
•If you have a broadband/PPPoE connection, check the for connection icon in the system tray (next to the time)
Confirm TCP/IP settings in your network card:

DNS's should be set to be obtained automatically. However they may be changed for troubleshooting purposes.

Try the following DNS entries

•196.25.255.34
•196.25.255.3
If specifying the DNS servers on your network card settings, it is recommended that you use the IP of your router as your default gateway
Clear your Browser's cache

NB: Confirm with your Network Admin before making any changes.

Anyway I tried all that and all my pings are getting timed out.

What do I need to try?
I think I lost connectivity with an automatic XP upgrade which happened when someone accidently rebooted the computer. Grrr
