There is some stuff i am not sure how to script but i am ofcourse 100% sure is possible. Platforms using this alot are Blogs and Video websites.

Anyway, i am having trouble with some HTML code and i am not sure how to do these, could anyone please help me?

1. What is the script for ranking the Top Downloads of the Week?
I want a gadget-like widget on the left side of my Homepage showing the Top 5 Downloads of the week. Now, obviously this will be based on the algorithm of "Most downloaded from Sunday to Saturday" :)

Side note: Is there anyway i could take that to advanced algorithms? Like instead "Most popular" based on Total Times Downloaded, Total Times shared via social networks and most commented?

2. How do make a side-list of "Recommended Stuff" based on the tags specified upon upload?
Like YouTube, without the tracking "You watched that video, it's unrelated to the video you're watching now. But we'll show this to you because yesterday you watched that video" if you know what i mean... just based on what you are looking at right now.

So i know this all sounds like alot so i obviously will credit you. I have seen this "technology" on YouTube and Blogs so ofcourse it is possible. Please keep in mind that this website is not a video website. I believe these "algorithms" can be done on anything.

Sorry to make you work and thanks alot. Like i said you will be creditted. If you think or know that you can do it PLEASE do it because i really NEED it for my website because without it, it's whole concept is broken.

Thanks again.

What you're looking for is a little more complex than just html. You're gonna need something like PHP/ASP.net etc.. A database to store all this data... Are you building this with a CMS or on some kind of framework? All this is possible, it's just not really achievable via a copy/paste of a script.. it all depends on how your system is designed.

You may find that for CMS's like wordpress, there will be readily available plugins for Top Downloads etc.. or you can take an existing plugin that does close to what you need and edit it. PM me if you'd like help with this.

Yes i really need help with this and i will PM you.

Gaining proper knowledge (especially when it is for things regarding your hobby) is so fun. I am learning more and more. Just yesterday i finally understood the function of CSS from HTML while last week i had thought it was some HTML 5 alternative, lmao.

Okay, so do you think that we can do this with jQuery?
It seems like Javascripting made shorter/simple

So let me get this straight:
1. HTML 5 = Backbone code of website
2. CSS = Fancy skin
3. SQL = Database of registered users (Basically)

I am not using any blog platform for this project and i am building it from scratch using Dreamweaver. I am advancing nicely and boy is it a fun learning trip :D

Uhm... i will PM you because i need your help with this script indeed.

as neverwhere said, server side scripting along with a database, and the bit quoted may be done with cookies, basically your whole website's nuts and bolts - and all that for a measly credit??

1. HTML5 is client side
3. Structured Query Language used in relational databases such as mysql etc is a whole other subject on its own.

speak again after you've dropped dreamweaver.

Lol, i agree it's alot of work for "measly credit" :erm:

Let's get something straight here as this is starting to make sense:

1. HTML 5 is client side, uploaded pages to the web > CSS acts is essentially the skin
> Solved

2. SQL is the database / table of registered users
>Solved

3. To do that "Watched that yesterday... have this" (Wich i don't want) is done by cookies as i assumed
>Solved

4. In order to do a featured widget of the most downloaded / popular stuff of the week it will require a javascript.
Q: Anyone willing to do it for credit? LOL :D

5. Java can be simplified as jQuery
Q: Can jQuery replace java as the simple version of it?

I must ask, what do you mean that i should drop dreamweaver?
How am i supposed to make my website then? LOL

So many questions. I hope i can resolve this.

I know how it looks to a guy that knows it , it's like:
" *facepalm* Wtf? Why does he even want to do this? Does he really think it's easy? Just some quitter noob trying big stuff "

I'd just like to clarify that i am none of that. Simply someone who has reasonable knowledge in this field seeking the help of those with more.

Dreamweaver is a curse to have. It makes anyone NEW to this think they're the bees knees. Learn to do this **** in notepad and you'll learn a lot FASTER and know how things work.

Once you know how things work, everything clicks and you can do MORE things.

That's how I started. I couldn't do a <table> to save my life until I just quit using stupid WYSIWYG's and did everything in Notepad

Java?

I'm sure you mean Javascript. Java is to Javascript like Car is to Carpet

And no, why would ANYONE want to DO something you for "credit" pay me money bitch ;) otherwise, learn to do it yourself because you're so keen on learning these things. Just don't drown jumping into the deep end hey

Agreed a lil' here. If you learn the basics of it all properly, it'll be far more beneficial in the long run. Luckily HTML/JS/CSS/jQuery are easy enough to pick up. Although instead of Notepad, something like Sublime Text Editor helps out a lil' more with some code completion and indentation :)

quick question how do i get a signature on my thread postings

Weird place to post a random question :erm: but go User CP -> Edit Signature

Lol i read the wikipedia :D
Only the first paragraph because i'm not THAT uninformed :D

Anyway @Acid, you want money? LOL

How much? :erm:

R50? Deal?
Okay, good.

Script, baby.

Lol

Anyway, yes i had meant jQuery.

So... i guess until i (IF) i submit, i will resolve to paying Acid :)
That's if i still want the feature :erm:

Here's a good question, since the new and flashy HTML 5 is only really (From what i learnt) a bunch of new meta tags and cool code. I think the real magic is CSS3...

Then why focus alot more on learning HTML to it's fullest rather then CSS?
Or is it obvious that i should learn both because CSS is somewhat basic?

Learn both...and get familiar with jQuery and jQueryUI, very useful to get some cool results fast :)

HTML and CSS aren't two opposing technologies. They work together. Know both.

As far as scripting, it's not hard to understand that you cannot just build these lists with jquery, or any Javascript, if you don't have proper server side code. Which means that you will have to do something like ASP.net (MVC is my preference in C#). This can't be done with an HTML editor, hence the comments to drop dreamweaver.

I would suggest that you first learn proper HTML and css, preferably without Dreamweaver. And only then learn the server side technology needed.

Thanks.
Never take me lightly, the brutal truth is required so that i can know exactly what i am dealing with.

Have a look at http://w3schools.com/

That's where I started and often go back to do the quick online assessments to test my knowledge of the subject. It also describes each tech pretty well. So what HTML is and what it does. CSS etc.

So in this order: HTML, CSS, jQuery (the rest can be done by CMSs and frameworks - like what you want)

Also Sublime Text is a great editor (also known as an IDE).

I charge R800 per hour

Yup, get an understanding of HTML and CSS. Javascript and jQuery can follow next.
Then add a server side language like ASP or PHP.
Once you have all that you will probably need to know a little SQL (MySQL, Microsofts' SQL thingy)
The MySQL section in the PHP manual has good enough explanations with code snippets.

This is not a 2 week "adventure".

It is a nice thing to do in spare time though.
