I'm leaving my company, and they give you an option to buy your laptop.

What would the following laptop by worth?

Its just over 18 months old and is in immaculate condition.

I'm not planning on trying to sell it. Its always handy having a spare laptop around, and it's a good deal why not?

Where do you ask for the asset value?
Normally the business should have a value on their books. Usually HR/Finance or IT could also have it if they have proper lifecycle inventories for their systems.

I think standard business practice is to have the value at zero after about four years, but I could be wrong on this value

Generally they are depreciated over 3 years so the book value will be half of what was paid less Vat.

Around the 2k to 2.5k mark . I used to buy my old T Series laptop for R1000 - R1200 , core i5, 8gb ram 500gb hdd,

What are you guys smoking?
I think there is a big difference when it comes to the value of a laptop vs what one is willing to pay for it.

If the company will accept R50 for it then by all means, go for it. I think, given the specs, the value would be around R8000.00 to me if I were to estimate an amount.

What would I personally be willing to pay for it? Around R8000.00, because you are taking an inherent risk buying a used laptop with 18 months warranty remaining (assuming the standard 3-year warranty). This laptop new would probably run around R18000 by my estimation, so I would think R8k is a fair price.

Lower spec versions sell for above R20k. I reckon you could easily sell it for R11k but at the end of the day see what the company will accept.

The asset value is R11k, which is what they are asking for it. Thanks, looks like I will pass.

Most companies will take book. They're not in the business of selling second hand hardware. Been there, done that.

So my R11k depreciation calculation is spot on.

Still don't think it's a bad price based on carbonite used prices.

My wifes old company sold their 2012 macbook pros (think it was in 2016) for 1k! Each employee had the option to buy their own unit only for that price. My wife managed to get IT to sell 2 of them to her (one for each of us)... I managed to approached some of her colleagues (who were also friends of ours outside of work) and managed to get them to buy their own for me and gave each R500 for doing so. Eventually had 7 extra which I sold at 4k each haha. Needless to say I scored big time!

Her last company (she just got retrenched a few months ago) and asked if she could buy the laptop they let her use. Was about 2 years old and they wanted around 70% of what they paid for it... politely declined.
I think alot of companies are trying to get as much as possible due to the covid losses.
