Managed to finish it without cheating... sure I saved a snapshot of the game regularly... but I managed to finish it without cheating

Try FireFox?

Another way to cheat is to load the program into a disassembler and take a look at the source code - usually you can figure it out especially if it's a text adventure game...

I was going to suggest Leasure Suit Larry it had Alt-X to skip those pesky questions, but yeah POKE FTW!!!!!

Cheats are there to help the programmer test. So cheats have been there since games were being programmed, I dunno when it became popular to leave the cheat in the finished product tho.
