There seems to be a controversy regarding self-installation, I for instance do not believe in it, from what I've read on this forum there is no such thing.

People have claimed that they did the self install and still got charged the installation money.

I don't see any justification in installation charges but, this is Africa .. :) .. the Telkom guy that came to do my installation did nothing I could not do.

People are under the impression that the line has to be changed but they do not touch the line at all, its the same cable its the same everything, so yes, we are being "raped" by Telkom on those charges.

No need for that.

if you currently have a adsl line, and you move to another exchange, do you pay for installation again?

Off course yes, how else will the profit be better than last year?

Self-installation means that a technician will not come out to your residence to plug the modem in. You have to configure the modem/router yourself and purchase the adsl filters from them. The filters are in the region of R30 each, and you need one for every standard telephone (pots) device you will still be using on the same line. If you use a splitter, you only need one filter connected to the splitter itself, and then you can plug in as many devices as you like behind it.

All you need to do then is to set up your adsl modem/router with the username guest@telkomsa and password guest so that you can verify the installation. These details will only allow you to browse Telkom's Web Site. Go to http://www.telkom.co.za/verifyadsl and verify your installation. It takes about 30 minutes for the verification to gou through. In the meantime, you can set up your adsl modem/router with the username and password that your ISP allocated to you. Reboot the modem/router. You should now have access.

You will probably be charged the R404 installation fee, but if you kept the installation order number, and log the dispute with Telkom, they will reverse the charge.

Hope this sheds some light on the self-installation procedure.

Yes, no need for this attitude please.

:)

P.S. Your signature doesn't leave much to be desired.

Went into the Hermanus branch and the sales rep. told me the self install was R200, as opposed to the R404 Telkom installation.

Is that right? Sheesh, why the R200?

Thats just BS! He'll probably tell you, you have to pay it in cash, and then pocket the money for himself.

You pay nothing for Self-Install

I just received the coolest surprise from Telkom they moved my line in Dec for free no installation charges for Line or ADSL...:)
