What is the typical development environment at your workplace

Macs (not MACs, that's different) have been a staple of my design/coding diet for the last 15 years, give or take. I have been using BBEdit since ver 3 and have only ever pd upgrade fees, if that gives you an idea. I also have at any given time at least one windozer and a linux machine. Currently, a P4 that dual boots ubuntu and XP, with Win7 on my MBP (VMWare).

Now, Fanboy vs OS user. I like to think I fall into the "user" category. I am FAR from an AppleFB and often cringe when I see people whip out their iPads in a coffee shop. If I am working on my mac at the time (I do a lot of work on the go) I either cover the apple logo with something or I pack it away, to avoid being mistaken by the FB as some kind of comrade in the OS wars.

That's odd. Seen plenty web designers use Mac's. I'm a web developer, no Mac for me...can't stand those things!

How do you get to R10K? R10K can buy another box and then you load Linux on them both. For free

I was referring to the Mac being R10k more than an equivalently spec'd PC not running Mac OS i.e. R10k for Mac OS.

I wouldn't say the Mac is typical. Most corporates use Unix or Linux to host database and Windows for desktop and LAN.

Use whatever is cost effective and gets the job done. In some cases that may well be a Mac. Wasting money on "nice to have's" is the cause of many a start-up failure.

We're a MS Gold partner, so it's no surprise that we're all running Windows machines - laptops for the majority of us.

I worked in a building above the company that does Vodacom's advertising prints - their hardware was Mac, from servers (G5) to tea lady.

True, but that might change. They only use MS because it is (was?) the most popular and well known OS. All financial service providers are in the business of finance, not IT They cater to what people are comfortable in. And change comes about 15-30 years after it happened everywhere else

Our company has an all Dell / Fujitsu outfit, all Windows. If you want to use a Mac you are welcome, but it is at your own dollar and up to your own knowledge to make stuff work on AD.

Our company's policy is also Windows running on IBM, if you work as a developer you get admin privileges on the domain and you can actually use a Mac but no support calls will be answered. Everyone else must use Windows (Which is pretty much 95% of the company)

Hehe, well the non-technical people will use Access but all back end systems in a bank will be IBM through and through. Java running on IBM hardware (IAX most like) and Mainframes (with apps written in RPG). All connecting to IBM DB2 (easily the worst DB I've ever used).
