A lot has been set recently about the 2-year contracts and subsidised phones.

There is nothing as such wrong with a 24 month contract!

I actually love them, though I do have some reservations...

I know I'm paying for a decent phone for 22 months, but I accept the cost. It is a way of financing a deal, and once signed, one does so willingly. Besides, as it is a business expense, the receiver pays his part for it. I consider it as a form of credit required to do business similar to the vehicle on 48 monthly downpayments.

What I don't like about these contracts, is the "freebie" HiFi's, Cameras etc that are include in the deals. I, and I guess many others, would love to pay less per month and not pay for these specials over 24 months.

I would love to see an industry voluntary agreement (without ICASA being involved) to offer packages with a phone, and the same without a phone so one could decide which way to go.

Ok, this is my view in my circumstances. 24 month contracts work for me, but there is room for a lot of improvement. Maybe we will see some of this courtesy of Virgin.

PS: Virgin would cost me around 30% more than my current VC contract - phone included. I receive a lot, but don't call a lot.

Why are our contracts 24 months? In the UK Vodafone (as well as the others) offer the same phones with less expensive 12 month contracts.

Why the extra 12 months? I have a huge problem with that.

I won't mind a 12 month contract with a freebie phone and no "freebie" HiFi's etc.

the problem is that the industry has had 10 years to come up with such an agreement and haven't, so something needs to be done. Virgin's entrance appears to be "that". Let's hold thumbs.

I'd certainly be less reluctant to sign a contract either. People like to point out that they're getting a state of the art phone when they sign with vodacom or mtn but it soon becomes obsolete.

"State of the art" usually gets dumped for "reality of pocket" :D
