I was just watching german tv and there was an advert:

ADSL flatrate (1mbit) plus !!!national phone flatrate !!! for 14.90€ which is about 120 rand a month.

HELP!!! That cannot be. We are paying almost a thousand rand for this piece of crap connection and in other countries you get a ADSL flatrate plus phone flatrate for 120 Rand.

And no, it is not VoIP, it's a normal phoneline.

Just had to tell this to show once again how expensive Telkom is.

They. Europe.

still... that's a 1000% price increase and a 10000% product quality decrease

everyone that I talk to overseas have ADSL accounts for less than 30 Euros a month and very fast and unlimited downloads, no telkom cap!

yeah, I talked to a friend of mine in the UK, last week. He's getting DSL 512 installed with NO CAP, for the price of 8 pints in the pub. Hmmm, I had no answer to that.

did he tell you how much the pint in a pub was though? £2.30 in London. Or as close to R30 as you come.

Tell him how much you pay for beer, I bet he will have no answer to that.

lol well it is £20 / month. I think using direct exchange rate conversion is not really accurate. You could use it and arrive at, let's say R 240.00/month (which is still a hell of a lot cheaper). I think it's more accurate to look at what that amount of money can buy you in your own country, and if I can get DSL 512 uncapped for the price of 8 pints in the pub, eish I would be an extremely happy chappy!

the point is not the very cheap adsl flatrate but the included national telphone flatrate. you can call anyone in the country on a land line as long and as much as you wan't to and you don't pay any extra.

a 1000% increase is still 500% cheaper than some Telkom call charges :-)

"Telkom’s billing structure allows for profit margins of up to 1 500% on some calls, according to a report asking for telecommunications reform. The report uses the example of a five-second fixed-line-to-cellphone call, which would cost 12c in interconnection charges, but which Telkom bills at R1,89 for the full minute, yielding a margin of about 1 500%." - from M&G

Do you happen to remember the company that made the advertising? I come from Germany, and I still follow German IT news - I would have heard of a phone flatrate. I'd like to verify the whole thing.

I'm german too :-)

Yes, you get it from "arcor" for 14.95 and from "1 und 1" for 30 € or so (but that is 6mbit); those are including adsl flat. As well you get verious other pure phoneflatrates such as flexfon for 14.95.

Always calculate the other costs into the package. You get a DSL/Phoneflat package from Arcor for EUR14.95, but you only get it bundled with an Arcor ISDN line (EUR19.95/month) and and an Arcor DSL6000 line (EUR25/month). The package is not available for the cheaper ADSL lines (2000 or 3000). So we are looking at a total monthly package of EUR60 (about R480). Still cheap for what you get, but not as cheap as it may look on the first glance.

Regards, Alex

well ok, but still damn cheap for phone and adsl flat together.

What you don’t seem to understand is you are not just paying for your ADSL Bandwidth in this country BUT also included in this excellent price is top notch service from Telkom. Now this is worth more than any old cheap services overseas.:p
