You know, when I was 21 I had a BMI of, well, 21. My doctor told me I was underweight and need to gain at least 5-10kgs!

So I don't believe this 18.5+ BMI carp. If I have a BMI of 25 I'll be more than healthy, so something here seems amiss.

It is scientific and it is specific, but it is not specific to fitness. All it is, is a ratio that can describe body type. Perhaps the confusion comes in with the term overweight - it doesn't mean obese, and it doesn't necessarily indicate unhealthiness.

(FWIW: my body fat is similar to froot's. It's all genetic. I haven't stepped into the gym this year and I'm certainly not fit atm. But enough about that, I'm off for a smoke.)

by scientific u mean it uses math? what else does overweight mean except you weigh more than you should. There is no confusion with the term overweight i assure you.

I never said body fat was a fit term, i did say it was probably a better indication of body type than BMI.

I assume ur not overweight? Showing that ur low body fat is indeed an indication of your body type?

I tried the finger part after swallowing the wrong pill once... didn't work for me.
I'm just naturally well-built. Lean, but heavily-muscled. I usually spend about 12 hours a week training, but don't have a gym contract :)

:D Know the feeling..... i just can not get myself to puke.... would fail as an anorexic........

Well i'm still green with envy:eek:

BMI of 25 and up is unhealthy...

Apparently not, according to some sources, BMI is largely disregarded as accurate.

Rather trust in your body fat ratio.

When I was a lightie at school I had a BMI of not much less than 24, I was extremely active and extremely thin. This scale is not a good measure.

well built ? oke you need your brain checked ....

Anything below 4.5% body fat is declared anorexic? so how are you well built? you can only be scrawny, and your muscles show cause you have no meat on you ?

I have been a professional athlete for a number of years now, thus the well-built bit. I'm naturally "underweight", combined with the exercise which is the reason for the low fat percentage.

Yep - BMI, waist-to-hip, and waist circumference together give a picture, which you can't see looking at just one figure.
That's if you're trying to measure "healthiness", as opposed to "thinness" or "fitness". Percentage body fat is a bit different, as it's not just a body measurement involving scales and measuring tape (and it can be difficult to measure accurately).

There's nothing wrong with BMI, it's just a calculated ratio - it's when it gets interpreted that it's a problem.

Your BMI is: 26
according to the site, but as others said this is very misleading, as in my last fitness assestment my body fat was (in dec) 12,7% - and something like 14-15% is the average body fat percentage
