What is your computing setup?

Hi all,

I'm thinking of making a change to the way that I interact with technology at home.

Last night I realized I spend a lot of time browsing the web - forums, news etc - but not getting anything really useful or enjoyable done. I could read books, or play games, or watch something on TV, or study for my upcoming exams, but instead I just surf. It is a complete waste of time.

Right now I have a work laptop, which I only use for work (ie never use it at home unless it is work related), an oldish gaming PC (Phenom II X6, Radeon 7790), and an Android media player upstairs that streams content from my downstairs gaming PC. My gaming PC is in my room, and it is a bit crowded in there. So I sit and surf and surf and surf, and its irritating me. I wouldn't mind if I played games for hours instead - I see that as more productive - but instead I just surf. Its like a bad habit I need to break.

I'm thinking of buying a small laptop (might wait for Beema/Mullins), and an HTPC for upstairs. I could move my PC up to the lounge temporarily I suppose, its just that it would be a bit of an eyesore.

My aim is to get more productive use out of my computing than just wasting my time browsing the net.

What do you guys think? What are your computing setups like? How much time do you spend in front of a computer? Do you feel that you use it productively?

I have an HTPC in the lounge and bedroom and a gaming PC for myself and my wife in the study. We watch all of our TV except for sport on the HTPC's so I guess based on that we spend quite a lot of time in front of our computers. My wife doesn't game much currently and I probably spend a few hours a week gaming on the PC.

For browsing we normally use our phones or a tablet (my wife spends a lot of time on Pinterest on her phone) but I don't really browse all that much.

Had a similar issue with too many gadgets, so decided on simplifying everything, got a 60" Smart TV, Alienware x51 Desktop pc and now I do everything in one place, be it gaming, watching series or surfing the web :)

I pretty much spend most of my free time in front of the TV/PC, not much else of interest out there for me at the moment as I'm enjoying it.

I don't think buying more gear will help your cause. ;)

I'd just focus on reading more quality articles online.

I have a gaming machine that is connected to a receiver that is connected to my TV in the living room.

I use it for watching movies/series and gaming. All of my devices are connected via wifi though so I can access my movies drive from the bedroom TV as well.

Those of you that play PC games connected to TVs, how do you control them? Mouse? Keyboard?
