No idea. But wow they put A LOT of effort into design. The design of the gadgets is always appealing, eye-catching and best of all, user intuitive. Obviously the underlying OSs (OSX and iOS) are awesome too, but it's the user interface design that makes it killer.

Well, where else in the world do you see a company get paid so much by software developers who develop software for them.
Its a brilliant strategy really.
I dont have to anything, developers come running to me, they want their software on my platform, and i get paid for it.
Shucks, all i have to do is test their programs so it does not crash my OS.
Regards, Steve

Apple knows what you want before you want it. They create something that you didn't realize you needed and once you have it you cannot live without it.

There was smartphones on the market before the iPhone. But the iPhone redefined the market, everybody made their smartphones to beat the iPhone they didn't really create new things they just tried to do what Apple did and add one or two unique features. Same applies to the iPad. There were tables on the market before the iPad, but again, the iPad changed the market. Now everyone is making tablets that is competing with the iPad with just one or two other features...

Apple creates the market or redefines the market. And that is why they are so successful. They don't simply play in the market.

Best way to describe Apple is the sign I had in my Bar some time ago:

Create such a need/want for the device that people will actually make all the con's look like pro's.

Their brand and marketing is amazing. It makes people want to be part of that crowd. They feel exclusive. It's like a teenager wanting to be cool. Lots of psychology in play.

Apple products are like fashion accessories, in fashion today, out of fashion tomorrow. While they have definitely redefined/created new markets with the Ipod, Iphone and IPad, I will never understand why anyone, outside of the arts/film industries, would buy a Mac. A Mac these days is PC hardware with an OS that is no better than Windows 7 or any of the other free popular linux distros.

Another thing that bugs me is the costs involved with repairing one. There is always a cheaper, better alternative, but due to Apple's marketing people will buy one just to be cool (as numerous others have pointed out). One friend of mine was having issues with her Windows XP notebook. It was about 3 years old. I fixed it in a couple of hours for free, but the most it would have cost her at a store was R200 p/h of service. Another friend of mine had her macbook (which was literally 2 weeks out of warranty) and took it to Apple shop where they wanted to charge her something like a minimum of R500 just to look at the thing.

Totally agree with you. Tablets have been around before the iPad and the same applies to smartphones, what apple did was to work on their marketing which is the best. It took me a while but now I am happy Android user

- High Quality Products
- Lots of research on everything, even the way you click on something or how their icons look
- Being the first to mass-market something, which they know will work
- Doing a good job in gluing it all together in the end (The quality, the size, the OS, the features, the look and the experience)

And then when they do it, and other big companies copy them, you KNOW apple has a good device. (Like for example when samsung copy them)

As a long time Linux user I can say that this is not the case.
I need a proper command line environment for work purposes. Windows command line is a joke, and I'm simply tired of having to fiddle with my Linux desktop when I have work to do (usability, drivers, app support). OSX gives me third party support, and a decent command line environment. My mac is far from a fashion accessory. Before I get labeled as a fan boy, I'm not a big apple fan. You can pry my linux servers and android devices from my cold dead hands, but OSX an Apple hardware is solid.

Yeah i reckon it's their software that takes them to the next level. Some things are just so much easier on IOS, whatever you need is usually one app and a click away. And basically no virusses, so no formats, no hassles, customers stay happy and loyal.

Like cars, cell phones are very desirable everywhere in the world. Apple incorporates those elements in their designs that drive the lust associated with the most desirable cars. The iPhone is like a Ferrari/Bugatti of the phone world ... and the secret is: It's is actually within reach for millions of people (unlike the cars).

They actually care about software, and the user experience, unlike most hardware manufacturers. Steve Jobs is obsessed with quality, and it shows in their products.

Totally agree... Then, add Jony Ive to the hardware design mix... Can't go wrong.
