On a mapped network drive I discovered a hidden folder called bar with a recycle bin icon. Files on the desktop of a user keeps disappearing and end up in there on their own and it looks like whatever gets moved there is ready to be deleted as though it were in the recycle bin itself. Virus scan picks up nothing (Granted we only allowed to use McAfee :(). :wtf: I'm worried there is nonsense sitting on the file server. Nevermind the user may also have lost some files and her PC is most likely infected as well.

XP SP3

EDIT: I think this BAR folder actually only shows things in the users own recycle bin so not as serious as I first thought. But user still says files are being moved into it so either someone is playing around or it is still malware lol :)

if one user has malware on their PC you better look at all the user PCs & server.

can DL something like.

malwarebytes
superanti spyware
(the list goes on.....)

& then use those to clean the PCs & then remove.

users should be warned about what sites they visit & not opening funky email. & all AV should be set to scan USB drives as soon as plugged in ( not standard on all AV but can generally be manually changed...)

If you take a look at the EULA of those Anti-Malware programs as far as I know it is only allowed to be used for free if you are a home user. :( There is actually no AV program to my knowledge that can be used for free in a large business when sticking to their EULA. We have a very strict network admin who will slaughter even if I just use it then remove it lol.

I still don't know what this bar folder is on the file server :/

from what I've seen MS security essentials also seem to catch a few of those nasty bugs. Maybe DL that & run that quick. This was made freely available to business sometime ago & you wont be stepping on anyones legal/software toes if you run that quick(as far as I know - unless they restrict it according to the size of the business.) Won't solve all your problems but could function as proof that the comany needs to invest in some kind of software to solve that problem with, then they might understand the need & make space in their budget.
