Ok, So I am embarrassed to ask, but here goes. I recently moved in to my own place and now for the first time I'm cooking for myself. I normally buy chicken packs and that lamb packs they sell on the shelf at pick n pay.

A friend suggested I buy a half lamb. What types of meat do I get from half a lamb. Yes I know, its lamb, but I mean chops, pieces etc.

Any advise is greatly appreciated.

Just go to the shop and have a look, i dont think there is standard for half lamb packs but the ones i usually buy contain chops and maybe some thicker cuts.

You can ask for different cuts it depends on what you want. In your case just ask for them to cut it into chops.

You'll generally get a pack of cutlets, ribs, shank, shoulder, liver, kidney and some chump chops.
Although it depends on how you ask them to cut it because you could just get larger roasting shoulders or legs rather than the cutlet chops.
I prefer cutlets though.

Leg, Shoulder, chops, stewing cuts, neck (half of).

The last (and first) one I bought weighed 20KG (so I got 10) make sure you have space :)

why don't you just go to the butcher and ask them specifically for what you want - lamb chops, roast etc. If you are by yourself and you get half a lamb I can see quite a lot you probably wouldn't use.

Ja, half a lamb is quite a lot of meat for one person to consume during a month. Unless she loves meat so much that she eats it for breakfast, lunch and supper...daily! :D

No man, just pickup a pack from Pnp and some freezer bags, go home and take 2-3 chops and bag it individually and freeze. They dont laeve kidneys and livers in the packs lol

Q guys , How much does a half lamb go per KG? +-

half lamb around R50-R65 per kg..
its not worth the money though.
i usually get sliced leg pieces. its a bit more money, but then you dont get the fatty ribs and chops and odd bones etc..
if I want chops, then I just buy chops.
Remember:
lets peg half lamb at R60 per kg. for half lamb is about 7 kgs sometimes, which means @R60 per kg, its R420.this is meat fat bones ribs chops... etc.
leg cuts are around R80-100 per kg. lets peg it at R90. x 7kgs = R630. this is alot of meat, leg cuts only have one small centre bone. less fat too.

ur choice really..
