Hey Guys,

I need some advice and pricing on a motherboard, mine recently gave in. I have 2x1GB DDR2 667 mhz ram sticks(preferably the board should support dual channel) a Pentium D 940 Socket LGA 775 CPU (800mhz FSB). 3 or more sataII ports is needed with raid. I would also like a optical out for my speakers but its not so important.

I want a board supporting the above described features nothing fancy as I want a "cheapy" Don't want to spend a stack of cash as I'm looking to upgrade to a i5 system later.

I would say a gigabyte G31 but I don't think they support raid. Whats your budget?

Don't think you can get an LGA775 board with RAID for under R1000.

The Asus P5Q at around R1300 is popular.

ASUS P5QL-E is the cheapest Intel chip board with a ICH-10R. The Board meets all your requirements

Why go for an old G31 chipset with the old ICH-7 controller on it?

Way over my budget, besides I'm not looking for something high end. Thanks anyway.

may as well hijack this thread, these 2 boards look like good candidates.....

any other good boards anyone can recommend for around this price? I'm also looking G31, but its sooooo crappy...

I recently bought a Gigabyte G41M-ES2L, not the best board but does its job and very capable of overclocking (for a cheap board). Doesn't have raid, but just get yourself the G31 or G41 and buy yourself a raid expansion card - its going to be cheaper and more efficient. As for the optical out, the G41 board supports this with an extra little expansion board.

Nothing wrong with a G31 if you don't need RAID etc.

The board I have has 4 memory slots, dual channel, 3 PCI expansion slots and 2 PCI-E slots for SLI/XFire. 4 SATA slots, 1 IDE slot, 1 floppy disk slot. No integrated VGA. Can overclock the FSB to 1600 Mhz. The only drawback on the P5PKL/1600 is it has a max memory capacity of 4 gigs. I think all the G31's are like that? Can anyone confirm?

Looks like this is pretty much the best buy for a budget board, still has integrated HD graphics and gigabit lan...only 640

Also when considering a mobo, newegg.com has a plethora of user reviews for all kinds of things. Make sure the board you want to buy doesn't have a recurring problem for users who bought that board. Was going to buy the ASUS G31 board (can't remember the model name now), then read some reviews on newegg and I'm off ASUS for a while.

hmmmm.....good point, will check there for any issues...
just by way of update, I'm going to get a integrated graphics board with a DVI that can at least play HD movies. Later I will upgrade to a better dedicated x16 GPU. This will reduce cost further for now...just checking which of these budget boards have a DVI out with integrated graphics
