I've had an old cyba-snipa mouse for pushing on four years now and it's finally starting to give up the ghost, I think I've managed to wear away the piece of plastic that pushed down when you left click.

Anyway it's time for something new, but all the mice that I've seen so far have either been super cheap 2-button mice or uber-l33t gaming mice. I'm looking for something in between - five buttons, decent resolution and response, but without stuff like adjustable weights, on-the-fly dpi changing and a million programmable macroes. Mainly for 'normal' use, with the occassional gaming session thrown in. Looking to spend R300-R400, any suggestions?

Slightly more than your price range, but strongly recommend this one - Logitech G9 - and its also highly rated by NAG ;)

This is pretty much the same boat I found myself in a few weeks ago. After a lot of walking around and searching (and not wanting to get a wireless or laptop sized mouse) I finally went for the Microsoft SideWinder X5 mouse (it is 5 buttoned which is nice - but it does also have the adjustable DPI - which is cool for things like photoshop - but pretty useless outside of that or gaming I suspect) So far it's cool - pity it glows red and not blue like my old mouse :( Oh .. and yes it is around the R400 mark - so not insanely priced and not a R99 cheapie that will break next week. (got it at Dion Wired btw)

I don't mind adjustable dpi or any of the other stuff, if the mouse is still decently priced. My current mouse has adjustable dpi, but I never use it and I'm not going to go out of my way to get it. I dont want to pay R750+ for a hardcore gaming mouse when I play maybe one game every two months.

Check out the Logitech M305, its about R400 at Incredible Corruption. I bought mine from Makro (R299) about 8months ago and it works great. Its a good size for normal-large sized hand and the receiver is tiny, which makes it easy to lug around. Only issue is the mouse is not Logitech Unifying enabled i.e. a "Unifying" enabled receiver will not pick it up. This is sucked when I bought my keyboard But alas:(

Still a pretty decent mouse, durable, lightweight and good response.

I use the Microsoft 3000 and it does the job and have not had any problems with it (touch wood). The Logitech mice have really small USB dongles which are really cool. They so small you could prob leave it connected to your laptop while carrying it around in your bag.

It's for a desktop, so I'm fine with wired, specially if it will save me a couple of bucks.

Aye Coolermaster Storm Sentinal is good for the price, but save a bit more for a G500 its worth it :D

i agree with Terumo...im very very happy with my G500....it does have fetures you probably wont use every day, but the overall quality and reliability of the mouse is really top class!!! you will buy this mouse and, since your a normal user, get atleast 6 years of use out of it ;-p
