I like the Seagate BlackArmor range and have been using it successfuly. I do however want to broaden my horizon with alternative views.

Any other recommendations?

I'm grabbing one of these as an "enclosure" http://hpshop.co.za/p-7357-hp-proliant-microserver.aspx

And will be slotting four 2TB disks into it, possibly 3TB ones if I can gather the cash.

And with a Bios update you can use the optical drive's SATA port for a HDD too, making it 5 internal drives. It also features an eSATA port that you can use to push your total up to 6 drives, but one will be outside.

Also, it has an internal USB port, so you can load up FreeNas or OpenFiler on it, making it a proper NAS :)

QNAP's are brilliant,Thecus is also picking up speed nicely, readynas is pretty reliable, blackarmor however is much simpler to use

I recommend freenas. I have a HP microserver with 4x 2TB and 8GB RAM, with the FreeNAS OS installed on a Flash Drive.. With my RAID setup I get about 5.3TB of usable storage.

Does it come with onboard OS?

No, but you can stick a usb flash drive in it (on the inside of the chassis) and load any OS you want. OpenFiler and FreeNAS both look very interesting. Also by booting off the flash drive you don't waste any of your hard drive space for the OS, those drives can be used 100% for your NAS storage.

FreeNAS. The HP Prolaint Server unfortunately uses a very bad quality network adapter so speeds might be limited. Pretty much the only network adapters that work well outside Windows environment are Intel adapters and some RealTek adapters.

When FreeNAS is used correctly however, you could easily max out Gigabit LAN.

HP Proliant Microserver running UnRaid would be my first choice tbh.
