Acer is fine, have had no problems with them so far.

Apple is great but it depends on the person and swordfish is pretty muc against the apples.

Sony have some good ones, been working with a 13.3" the last week and it is very nice.
please, I am drinking my apple juice as we speak! how can you say I am agains apples :D

yes sony are very good in most aspects, but they tend to do some stupid proprietary stuff sometimes and have a sort of the apple approach but to much lesser extent, hence why I don't put them on top of my list

Yes, that's normal in Windows XP. I know that. But why must I be sure to know how it works?

Does it mean that the Packard Bell crashes alot?
no more than microsoft does...

No. I installed linux on my laptop to see it would run with the hardware ( which it did). But unfourtanetly i wiped out the hidden portion of my disk were your copy of xp looks when you try reinstall it. Something to do with "tattoo's" and "exths" iam sure there is someone here who knows more about them than i do. If you not going to install linux then you wont have a problem. If you do want to install linux make sure you get the commands off the internet to "repair hiddden partition" before u do.

Why doesn't anyone say something about Packard Bell

I can get the EasyNote R3450 for R8 500.00

AMD Turion 64 ML30 CPU 1.6Ghz
512MB Ram
80GB HD
DVDRW Dual Layer
10/100 wired Lan and Wifi
15.4" WXGA Diamond View Display
3USB 2.0 Ports
S-Video Out
Firewire
ATI Radeon Xpress 200M 128MB Shared Memory

What about this?

Piesang, given your price limitation and specs, this is in all probability the machine that you will find best suited. I take it it is the same one that IC have on promotion at the moment?

Have never used or sold a PB NB, so cannot pass judgement thereon.

I've got a feeling that Apple is going to be releasing a intel iBook this month at MacWorld. Intel chips would mean a significant bump up in speed IMO as well as a drop in price.

Got to get my hands on one just for the triple-boot though I doubt it will be too long before os x will run windoze in a bubble a la classic os9 and pretty much seamlessly integrate XP into OsX.

Go listen to the Podcast "This Week In Tech", in the last podcast they were talking about it. They think apple might even make it posible to just double click an exe and it would just run like in windows. It does represent security risks tho.
TWIT is a great podcast. :)

Apple MacBook with fast dual core processor is already shipping but is expensive -cheaper ones also on way. BTW the intel iMacs are in SA already!

ZA store brought them in the day after the release they are not for sale yet though

IBM's are really good, very robust... but bl00dy ugly.

Nothing more sleek and powerful than a powerbook, the only hitch is that it's a mac.

Acer make good somewhat reliable entry levels... Dell has awsome support... HP ummm, I dunno... PB? only seen than at Indedible Connection :( Fujitsu Siemans, well priced and reliable. What'd I miss?

What about an Alienware ? Cant go wrong there in performance and looks

Nothing wrong with HP's. On my third one now, and the one my wife's using is 5 years old, flying GT->CPT every week for a year, did a month stint in Malawi (strapped into the back of a Defender) and it is still going strong ... oh, and they all handle 270km/h on a bike very well! :D
