What oil to use?

Do you really think a petrol attendant knows the difference between mineral, part-synth, full-synth, ester-based synth oils, much less the diff between 5w30 and 0w40, or even less the diff between VW505.00 and 505.01 oil specs?? :whistle:

Yeah, it's best to ask what they sell and then look at the can/bottle yourself.
 
I got me a tub of Mobile 1. ****ing expensive.

Just a quick one, when is the best to check oil level? Some say when the engine is cold some say whens its warm?

NOOOOOOO! Best time to check the oil is before you start the car, in the garage , in the morning.

Oil needs time to settle, and find its correct level.

That is why forecourt oil checking is really not recommended, as it will give you a false reading, and when you then top up, you are, in fact, overfilling the engine, and that causes a new set of problems.

Finally, the guy checking your oil at the garage is most definitely not an expert, and wouldn't know the difference between car oil and sewing machine oil, if it was put in front of him.

If you don't know what oil your car takes, check in the manual.

Yes, I've seen the videos put out by Prolong as well - I would steer clear of that particular little experiment! ;)
 
Any 15W-60 viscosity is ok. If you are using synthetic oil, its ok to top up with regular oil

Note to self: Never let a petrol attendant check my oil again, ever. I will do it myself from now on.

Didn't they also put sand into the engine and the thing just kept running or something to that effect? :rolleyes:

Any high performance engine apparently will use oil, regardless. I would love to know how pro long stops this?

Interesting, so as long as the majority of your oil is synthetic, its fine to use regular GTX or whatever it is?
