What other options are there, without installing a dual head video card, to do extended desktop on a PC?

Yeah, they're pretty cool and not too expensive. Just keep an eye out for resolution, as the cheapest ones don't go very high, and most people are doing at least 1680x1050 these days.
They use your CPU for processing power, which of course means you're not going to game on this, but a developer shouldn't really notice anything.
