What pc do i need to get broadband.

Okay kill me now, im sort of clueless.

Is planning on getting DSL soon and want to use laptop and normal pc at home at the same time.

Laptop is pretty recent so hardware is ok.
Pc however is a few years old and is mainly used by family for general internet browsing.

processor is Intel Celeron 466mhz with 128mb RAM.

I looked on telkoms site and they say i'd need a Pentium 1 - 200mhz.

Does this mean it wont work on my pc at all?
 
WOW! I didn't think those caliber pc's existed ;)

Do yourself a favour and upgrade, spend a few bucks and buy yourself a nice pc, get some recommendations in the general hardware and software section.

Tell the folks you've got R6000 to spend on a pc, what would they recommend

R6000 is not neccessary (my opinion) but at least R3000.

Broad ban will work on any computer that has explorer. and a network card

Nah... seriously the pc I have is still working really well, I have no idea why but it is actually really fast and I have no problems with it plus I have since gotten a nice Laptop since I was in London for a while so the pc is just for the family to use etc and didnt want to necessarily spend money, if i do spend money it would rather be on my laptop which now dont really need any upgrading.

I just want to make sure that I will have internet on the pc and then wireless on my laptop hence making sure the pc will work on the modem/router.
 
Ja, your PC is fine.

I'm not sure why you would even need a P1 200Mhz, but thats cutting it close to functionality, so they might as well start somewhere.
 
Agreed, PC is fine...although if you could by a stick of 256 or 512 MB of RAM you would see huge performance increase at little outlay but I think the kind of RAM you need may be rare now. Does your laptop have wireless? if not get a cheap switch (8 port) for about R200 and 2 network cables and plug into that with the comps.
 
No need to upgrade if you're going to use a router/modem combo unit to handle the PPoE connection and not your PC.

A Pentium I would do just fine even on a 4mbps connection. Even the really old IDE hard drives can handle 500KB/sec. :)
 
RAM & CPU makes some difference on the internet, especially since you'll have a firewall + anti-virus + spam filtering + bells & whistles for IE / FF / Outlook /etc
