My DLINK router came with something similar. Power to router + phone line in + line to router out. Is that what you mean? Not sure what the name is. Not sure what the point of it is, I've plugged the phone line directly into the router without problems.

the one i saw was separate,my old telkom router had a thing like that what i mentioned to power the router also, but this one looks totaly diffrent will see if i can get a pic

edit: yes its a surge protector

I guess you can't go wrong with having surge protection, especially if you got it for free?

My DLINK's wifi packed up, so I'm currently using a cheap Netgear without this apparent surge protector.

Yes these are surge\lightning protectors.

There are many places all over the world that still has their telephone lines and electricity coming from power lines running above ground that could easily be damaged by lightning.
I've come across a few modems getting damaged that way.

I've got one in the cupboard that came free with something some years back, IIRC there was a registration card to qualify for x rands of insurance.

... construction is of dubious quality though and I'd rather rely on a UPS.

i''ll see if i can take/borrow it (noone use it)
and use it esp now when winter time is coming

my lan cable used to be underground (from the main house to the grannyflat)
but then the puppy chewed it right on the point where it comes up from the ground,so ran one in the air

is that a risk for lighting?
it 1st go to a ap-then a modem so i can connect my xbox and pc with Ethernet
so if a spike comes will it blow it all or just my ap or router

i dont want it to kill my lan port/mobo
