Our domestic asked me if I could help her son (16) and daughter (21) out with an old computer, so I assembled a P4, 1Gb memory, 160Gb hard disc, DVD writer, case, keyboard and mouse and a 15" LCD monitor. Loaded Open Office, etc and some tuition programs and gave him a 3G modem with R 500 airtime on it, converted to data.

He has had it 6 weeks, then he sold it for drug money. The project that the daughter had spent hours doing (she is a trainee nurse) has gone, along with the equipment.

He did not know I knew about the sale and called me and sprung a big yarn about his friend was plugging something in, and it "blew" the computer. Did I have another one for him? So I asked him, how much did you get for the one I gave you free of charge? There was silence on the phone, then he replaced the receiver.

I have made up another PC for the daughter and hope he does not steal this one

Junkies p me off. Here's an idea, instead of the government spending big money on roads and stuff, they should just buy a whole lot of meth. Then offer it free and everyone who wants to do drugs can do it till they OD, no medical support for people who OD. That how you get rid of everyone who wants to do drugs. KILL THEM WITH DRUGS, THE LOT OF THEM!!!

Who is "he", the son?

Eish, sad. If you have the space/patience, tell the daughter you are keeping it at your house but she is welcome to come over and use it while her Mom is working there.

Otherwise, bye bye number 2 :(

I also gave our maid an old P1 laptop with Windows 98 on it (it's all I had, but it was working fine).
It had office on it and some games.

She brought it back a few months later, her son had tried to install Windows 7 on it.

I'm crying with laughter :D

Daughter's boyfriend fitted a steel sheet to her bedroom door and a steel frame. I suppose he could still come through the roof. Mother says he is not a junkie but has some bad friends who demand he get money for them for drugs. Original story, or same-old, same old. Wife reckons I am wasting my time. I do have quite a bit of working hardware that I got for free, but that is not the point

This is Gugulethu, not Rondebosch..

I had a similar experience... was helping out somebody who was starting out in business and didn't have any cash. He was going through a rough time, so I let him use my office space, my phones and additionally I took out a Telkom contract for a laptop so that he would have something of his own to work on.

About 2 months later, he admitted to one of my employees that he had sold the laptop (probably for drugs, coz i found out soon after that he was a bit of a junkie)

Arg, that is terrible. Try to do something nice for those in need and that's the reward we get. It's no wonder people turn a blind eye to those in need.

This is unbelievably selfish! Poor daughter. Phone him again and tell him if he sells the next one you are coming to his place to tie his testies.

That sounds like a good idea.

I think they were bitten off by the guy to whom he owed money. Maybe this guy's dog did it, I would have not come that close

This would piss me off to no end, as well.

I have only had good luck with this - also had an old P3 laptop that I fixed up and donated to a domestic for her youngsters.

I got a letter back a couple days later thanking me for it (nogals in such classy english too :D ), heard a little while ago that they are still enjoying it.
