What router do I need?

Sht your right. It has a modem, but doesn't appear to support ADSL. Good catch. I just assumed the WAN port would support ADSL, but it appears to only be weird Oz connection types (bigpond).

So you want to tell me that I won't be able to use this for ADSL? Because I just ordered this! ****!

I'm not 100% sure, but I suspect that ADSL won't work. It makes reference to PPPoE, but technically that doesn't have to be ADSL.

I'd suggest trying to get the order cancelled just to be on the safe side. If you can't get the router cancelled & it doesn't support ADSL then you'll have to buy a cheap stand-alone modem & connect the two.

This is what I do. I have a tp-link Wifi router and a separate ADSL modem, that's what that wan port is for. Still a nice router that, I would keep that one and just buy a stand alone modem.

Thanks for the help guys, really appreciate it. Would it be better to rather order this one from them?

That would work. As I pointed out above though it has 100mbps ethernet ports. Which is perfectly fine...unless you move very large files around your network regularly or want to stream to a TV from a NAS or something like that.

For 99% of the people out there that won't be a problem though. If you don't know what NAS stands for then you're probably part of the 99% for whom that router would be fine.

I use a router with "only" 100mbps ethernet too...its perfectly fine...so its really only an issue if you have a specific need for it.

I would in the future want to stream content from my htpc but I am also buying a switch from them for this. So this will work if I have a switch also?

The swith I'm buying;

TP-LINK SG1008D Gigabit 8 Port Switch (TL-SG1008D)

Jaa i have a similar set up with a netgear modem/router and zysel gig switch streaming from the N40l to my smart TV works well for me .I have a few ip cams connected to.

Thanks for the help. I will email them now and try to change the order as I have already paid for the items.
Just to get clarity because I have very limited experience with networking. I plug the adsl router into the switch and then my pc's and htpc into the switch also? This will enable all devices to have internet connection as well as transfer files between the devices?

Thanks again.

Keeper be warned though: Some wifi routers have this shtty habit of dropping everything down to the speed of the wifi. Seen it on Netgears & DLink.

i.e. Connect 2x wired PC + 1x wifi PC. Then transfer from the one wired to the other wired...that speed is capped to whatever the wifi is it. If that happens to be wireless g standard then you get a really shtty throughput, despite 100/1000mbps wired link.

NB Only *some* routers do this & it seems to be hit & miss.

Dunno why that is...maybe pada knows.

Not much you can do about that except hope you don't get one of those & lose the wifi if you do. I think if you can force wifi n standard only then this would mostly fix the problem but that I've not confirmed.

Wifi is only as fast as the slowest device connected to it, as a rule, so you can have a an awesome 300Mbps router, like I do, and have some pratt connect with a slow wifi adapter and bring it all the way down to 30Mbps. Quite irritating, but it's still more than fine for online gaming even at 30Mbps.

Those DSL routers with RJ45 (LAN) jacks are meant for connection directly to cable in countries other than SA. You can still connect it to a normal modem, however - quite handy for extending the capabilities of a single RJ45 port modem.

You really only want a decent ADSL modem/router with 4 ports. The Linksys X3000 has Gigabit ports, but feel free to choose from the other recommendations in this thread. 2 PC's and an HTPC - 4 ports on your router, why do you need a switch? A router is intelligent, a switch is essentially dumb.

Yes. ADSL router gets no POTS filter. *All* phones in the house must have POTS filters. Newer routers come with filters that are clearly marked though so it shouldn't be an issue as to which is what.

That is correct .

:erm: Have no idea what you just said or mean there, sorry. Which phones are you referring to?

Phones as in land line Telkom normal voice phones.

Don't worry about it. Just create a new thread if you get stuck & we'll help you when the time comes.

The WAN gets its routes from the ADSL's DHCP and acts almost as a gateway device.

Once you go Gbps ethernet on file transfers you won't want to be stuck on 100 Mbps again. My primary PC is stuck on 100 mbps due to an older motherboard and it's perfect for streaming, but less so for other things. Also if a file-copy saturates your network connection you have poor performance browsing and the like.

Also on WiFi, homeplug and such, you'll be lucky to get 1/3rd of the stated speed in actual throughput and sometimes it requires multiple streams to achieve optimal throughput.

After reading the last 2 pages I now have even less of a clue what to get than before, thanks guys :(
