well there is no difference other than HDD size. Only different model was the 60GB which had backwards compat, 4usb ports and card reader. 40, 80 and 160GB lack that and are smaller than the 60GB. Also some of the newer models have the 65nm chipset and consume less power. I say save a bit and get the 80GB it comes with a Dual Shock 3 while 40GB comes with regular SIXAXIS which doesn't vibrate. Sony screwed up at the beginning but they making up for it now.
You could buy a 40GB and swop out the HHD for a 120 or 250GB. Theres a link on facebook that shows you how to do just that.
