What should a service plan cover?

Hi,

Considering extending my service plan and warranty and need some info as to what is covered and what isn't. Dealership isn't much help on the topic so just looking for a list I can expect. Will then confirm with dealership in writing what off the list is covered.

Mostly a service plan covers labour for services and no wear-and-tear items.

Brakes / wiper blades / batteries etc... will all be for your account.
 
Service plan covers activities listed in the service book. No replacement of wear items, or fixing of broken things.
 
What car? Different brands can have different levels of cover?

Did you get a quote on what it would cost to extend?
 
What my service plan covers:
* Spark plugs
* Oil filers
* Fuel filter
* Air filter
* Pollen filter
* Sump washer
* Engine and transmission oil
* Brake fluid
* Coolant
* Labour for above items as recommended by manufacturer service schedule

Maintenance plan:
* Brakes (pads, disks, linings)
* Battery
* Wiper blades
* Clutch
* Shocks
* Globes
* Timing belts and tentioners
* Mountings
* V-belts
* Engine drive belts
* Starter
* Alternator
* Suspension
* Engine
* Gearbox
* Diff
* Steering components
* Engine management.
 
Current quote to extend:

Service Plan from 60 000km to 90 000km = R 12684.63
Maintenance Plan from 60 000km to 90 000km = R 28078.46
Warranty to 150 000km = R 3395 :wtf:

Car is a Toyota.

Service Plan and Warranty would cover some of the pricier items? Namely Engine and Mountings?
 
Okay, think I found some actual details on the Toyota site but still no mention of what the maintenance plan covers. Just says full coverage.

Yes but only to a certain extent.
I went through all the documentation when buying my car and I'm sure there was good reason for me to add the maintenance plan :P

Direct with Toyota. Liquid Capital decent?
Warranty covers engine failures depending on age and mileage :confused:

It's all in the names, really. A service plan would cover items and labour as per the service schedule, so ONLY filters, fluids and labour (and associated sundry items) as per specified service intervals. A maintenance plan would cover all that as well as items that wear through a car's regular usage, but aren't tied to a specific replacement schedule, like wiper blades, brake pads and discs, globes, clutches and the like. A warranty covers you against defects and unusual failures.

A service plan won't cover a clutch, for instance. A maintenance plan will cover a clutch worn out through normal usage, but not a gearbox failure. A warranty will cover a clutch disintegrating after 2,000km, or the aforementioned imploding gearbox.

Viability of extending the warranty then? Car is on 46000km at the moment.

If you intend on keeping the vehicle well beyond its factory warranty term, then it might be worthwhile. Warranty extensions offer a degree of assistance should things go badly wrong, for a relatively small price.

Maintenance plan extensions are only for the insane.
 
A service will cost you around 1k each time, and then on top of that you'd need to budget a bit for brakes, etc. which IMO would result in way less than what they quoting for extended service plan.

Maintenance plan will likely cover any mechanical failures. Being that your car is a Toyota with only 50k km on the clock, it's very unlikely that anything will go wrong.

I personally wouldn't bother extending any of the plans.
