What should be a simple audio question

I almost feel embarrassed for asking since it seems so trivial.

We recently had a television exchanged due to our old one being faulty. New model is a Hisense 32W22 LED.

Here's the scenario. We have a laptop used for music and movies connected using VGA+3.5mm, and an old DSD990 for DSTV and I use the TV RCA outputs to an amp for when we want a bit of extra beef (music and movies, generally, but not usually for general TV watching). Now, DSTV audio via the AV inputs plays on the TV and reaches the amp perfectly. Laptop, however, connected via VGA and 3.5mm, will play through the TV speakers but does not reach the amp. The only configurable audio output option is for the Digital Audio out, and on AV1 and PC, both are set to auto.

Any clues on how to get such a straight forward set up to works as it always has with my other TV's in the past? :wtf:

So you're connecting the 3.5mm cable to the TV currently? What is the input labelled as? Could just connect the laptop to both the TV and amp with a splitter then turn on one of the two depending on how loud you want it.

Yeah tv's seem to be very picky about which inputs exactly they will actually output to an amp, try swapping them around a bit.

steven, 3.5 is connected right next to VGA, labelled PC Audio-In. I'm trying to avoid the splitter route. No remote on amp, so if I switch source I don't want to have to do that on the amp too. I know... Lazy eh?
rorz0r, I have a VGA to component adaptor, going to try that along with a 3.5 - RCA and see where that gets me.

What I can't remember is if I have a digital-in on the amp. I have some 75ohm RCA which I can use if I do, try digital. I'll check later.

Thanks for the responses.

Why dont you get a 3.5 to rca its what i use paid 20 bucks for it at audio shop then you just feed the pc into the amp

I believe they want the TV to decide whether to output audio to the amp from either the PC or DSTV. No remote on the amp so changing inputs on the TV would effectively change "inputs" on the amp.

If your laptop PC is connected to the TV via the 3.5mm mini jack to the PC -Audio In socket, then it appears that the TV does not take this feed and route it back out via the RCA audio outputs, meaning it will only play through the TV's built in speakers.

Your only solution then is to bite the bullet, get a 3.5mm mini jack to 2 x RCA plugs cable, and feed the laptop PC audio into one of the amplifier RCA analog inputs - AUX, CD/DVD, TV/SAT, EXT 1, or even TUNER - to enable you to get the audio to play via the amp.

This means that you will have to select the required amp input when switching TV input sources - enjoy the additional exercise! :)

Thats the route I took. I had an minijack-RCA upstairs on a mostly unused Hifi. The main reason I was reluctant to go this route is that the main speakers on the amplifier weren't all that great on mids, so the TV speakers filled that gap. I moved the speakers from the hifi to the amp. Quite happy now.

Oh, I have a shared source on the amplifier :D If it picks up a signal from the PC it stops the TV audio. I can continue being lazy, with my VLC remote on my phone, I am sorted.
