What should be done with old SIM Cards?

Anyone know what one should do with old SIM cards that have been replaced by new ones or have expired at the end of contracts. Is it sufficient just to destroy the card?

Because of the copper content - I take mine to a recycling place a couple km's from me. Heaven knows what they do with them.

Check on you tube how many persons recover Gold from these things. yes ultimately, I do the same, after cutting the card into bits.

Are there any actions you should take to ensure the SIM number etc is recorded as being no longer useable and removed from whatever databases there are out there somewhere?

I usually just rub an old Sansui hi-fi speaker magnet that my dad gave me over them to hopefully erase them.

They just reuse the number and the next bloke gets debt collector calls etc.

I thought one was supposed to take them to a police station so they could be un-RICA'd from your name.

I just lose sim cards I no longer use. They eventually then expire/get deactivated/etc

They go in the junk draw only to be seen again when I'm digging around for that charger for the electric screw driver I no longer own that will hopefully work with some electronic item whose psu I can no longer find.

I'm not saying it wouldn't be silly, but I seem to recall that was the procedure from when RICA was announced.

I was also under that impression, but pretty sure they will have a nice laugh at your expense when you try that.

They don't have RICA terminals either, so they have no way to deregister it.

Asked the VC shop when I visited them this morning to sort a problem with my account and got some very strange looks as well. Seems no one knows what to do except just dump them in a drawer. No place for people who want to tie up loose ends anymore

I am sure they don't even bother checking sim numbers for petty crimes, but for the more serious crimes, as I understand it, the investigator obtains a court order that will allow him to request the information from someone with access to the system.
