Hey all

I've been wondering what I should realistically be expecting to earn in my current job and whether it ties up with what I actually earn. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

Facts:
- Got a BSc. IT from UJ
- In my fifth year of work
- I manage 6 other developers, from juniors to seniors. Training, code reviews, task assignment, mentoring etc. etc.
- I manage 9 projects currently
- I'm lead architect on a few projects
- I still write a lot of code and am up-to-date with current tech and development methodologies
- I do a lot of sales and business development (bringing business in to the company)
- I think I'm bloody good at my job :)

Let me know what you think?

What programming languages do you work with.

Firstly, this.
Do you work for a big company? Small company? Working for a big company could theoretically mean a bigger salary than a smaller company.

C#, JavaScript, VBA (when necessary), SQL, Objective C soon

I'm definitely a Microsoft dev. Developing mostly using ASP.Net and ASP.Net MVC at the moment. Lot's of experience with Windows Mobile dev too.

We have about 100 employees, so pretty big. We've got to the stage where we're only really dealing with big clients (banks, other financial institutions, large corporates etc.)

R40k to R50k per month. Anything less than R40k would be insulting.

I thought as much. Salary reviews are coming up and I want to raise this. Just not sure how the heck to be going about it!

Tell them you feel underpaid. Probably not a good idea to mention you have been comparing notes. Employers dont like that (*).

If they refuse, start looking for other work. You wont struggle. LOTs out there.

* - Its such a one way street. They decide your salary based on the market but dont like it when you use the market to prove you are worth more.

Saw this thread and didn't really want to create another thread. Hope you dont mind me "Hijacking" your thread :D

I have the following qualifiactions

-A+
-N+
-MCITP 70-270
- Lotus Notes CLP (LOT847, LOT 848, LOT 849)
- Lotus Notes Advanced Exam

But have been a network admin for 5 years, so I have my full MCSE in experience you can say :p

Just a rough estimate

if ur sure your company can easily afford to pay u more & youre 200% youre worth it
and if people like you are def earning more-then u should ask for an increase.

however, if youre not more than sure about these factors, i think it would be wiser to remain silent & continue working.
