So, I recently got a 3TB hard drive its a 7200RPM drive, I wasnt considering using as a OS drive up till now.

But, my 500GB OS drive is quite slow on boot up due to the 5400RPM spindle rate.

Should I split my 3TB in half and have 2x1.5TB and use one half for OS or will 7200rpm not be a big difference in OS boot up time compared to the 5400 drive?

Please dont advise me to buy a SSD, im totally against them.

Thanks.

Just partition 150-200GB or so on the 3TB drive for your O/S
It'll make a big difference to the 5400RPM disk

A 1.5TB O/S partition will make reloads a pain in the ass

So must I change the partition MBR from GPT?

+1, then buy a external hard drive case for your 500GB...depending on what you want to do of course. Are you planning on a lot of multi tasking? You may find a bottle neck with one hard drive if you are doing 2 write/ read operations at the same time.

Why? out of curiosity.

I find that the Price to storage ratio is very bad....I mean im not so impatient that games must load super quick and stuff like that, also i cant stand it when people install programs/games on there non-OS drive...it doesnt feel right.

You will probably have some issues installing Windows 7 on the 3TB drive. It doesn't like it very much and it might only show 2TB available. Hopefully you will be able to access the remaining 1TB from within Windows.

I personally wont use a 3TB drive for the OS, also, you need to confirm if that drive can boot with whatever OS you are using. with vista you might need a HBA adapter, and even with windows 7 you will need 64bit...

I understand your reasoning but trust me, you are missing out on the biggest upgrade to your system you can make.

If you want a really sweet OS drive then a 60GB SSD is the way to go (if you can afford it), mine has 33GB left over from the Windows, I've installed 99% of my programs on a spinner.

The RPM does make a noticeable difference, (from my experience with laptops)

If I was you I would split the 3TB like you said.

You comp[lain your OS drive is slow then refuse to get a fast drive? LOL.

You can get a decent 240GB SSD for like 2grand now. They aren't expensive anymore.

Some people just don't see the light. And when you shine it in their eyes, they close them.

SSD is definitely the way to go for a OS drive, I have the OCZ agility 3 120GB (http://www.rebeltech.co.za/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=14&products_id=4976), the thing is excellent for the price... I wouldn't settle for anything less than a 120 GB, with windows installed and a few games on, it gets full quickly.. I wanna up to a 240 or so, that would satisfy my needs completely

I would only recommend 60GB if you are only going to install your Windows and a few programs on it, otherwise 120GB is the "standard" these days.

Like I said I have 33GB left over on my SSD and I only have the Windows installed on it.

yeah, but install games, the latest hitman used 24 GB of my SSD's space, so add that to a win 7 64bit ultimate install, and office, you are pretty much out of space a 60GB, also how much of the 60 GB can you use? 52GB?

Are you issuing these Links with regard to the SSD discussion?

NO. Partitioning a 3TB spinner for an optimum OS partition. Would have thought it would be clear from the content of the links which says nothing about SSDs.

exactly what I'm clearing up, didn't read the article, I have had a few guys before that thought a SSD spin very fast.
