What software do you use?

Have a look at http://www.darktable.org - it's open source and IIRC free.

If you're a canon shooter then when it comes to working with CR2 files Canon's own DPP is actually pretty good.

If you're a Mac user then have a look at Pixelmator before you pony up for PS.
 
For managing my pics I use Picassa.

For processing RAW files and light editing I use the Olympus Viewer software that came with the camera or the Gimp for more involved editing.
