What speed do I need?

I'm busy re-applying for fibre at a new place. I'm coming from 100Mbps, but I'm not sure I need all the speed, and thinking maybe 50Mbps will be sufficient.

I use it for streaming Netflix, YouTube, some downloads, videos calls, etc.

Should I stick with 100Mbps or downgrade to 50?

What downloads? Xbox, PS5, etc or just the odd file now and then.

If the latter, I'd go down to 50.

Occasionally big files like games from Steam or PS5, but other than that mainly movies and series.

I could also go down to 30 if it didn't make much of a difference for my needs.

Had fibre installed today - coming off VDSL I settled with a 50Mbps line. I might upgrade further once I've made my final payment to telkom.

Stick with 100, the difference in cost is negligable.
R300 is a little more than negligible to me.

It's with Frogfoot (only option) and I'm going through CISP, so the cost is:

30 - R749
50 - R849
100 - R949

R200 difference between slowest and fastest, but if I don't even feel the difference in speed, what's the point to going for the fastest?

Ok - I'm with openserve (only option). I'd probably for the 100 given those prices.

Finally, congrats!

Yeah, no. I hardly ever download and the only streaming I do is YT. The kids will watch the odd Netflix show or movie every now and then.

R697 for my 35Mbps line vs R997 for 100Mbps. I can use that R300 elsewhere as I don't need the extra bandwidth.

It's been a long wait and we're still a little shocked they they lit up the suburb. We stream everything and managed on a 30Mbps vdsl line for years. That's why I went initially for the 50. I'll wait and see how it plays out.

I'd probably just leave it at that.

If you have consoles, just let it update during the night. I had 1Gbps at one stage and, unless your downloading massive amounts of data, it's a waste of money. When browsing or for everyday use, you won't notice the difference.

Enjoy your new upload speed. Should be more than double.

Been on 50/50 with CISP and Vumatel for like 2 years and recently with the promo went to 100/100 only benefit i have seen is faster download of Steam games if we were running at 50/50 when we suppose to be 100/100 i wouldn't even notice but this is preference 50 is enough for me and the family.

Yeah, I went for 50. I think it's definitely enough.

It's not so much the upload speed but the fact that the internet shouldn't stall while I'm doing it.

We are on a 50/50 package at the moment although it is running at 100/100 due to a Vumatel promotion. I WFH, we stream Netflix, YouTube, DSTv, Red Bull TV, F1 TV, etc. have remote access to CCTv, alarm, smart devices, ESS, weather station, etc. and have a number of phones, tablets, laptops, etc. and 50/50 has been great.

i was on 25mbps for quite some time - upgraded to 50mbps to see if it would help with my line dropping (tried everything else).

WFH and stream constantly (Netflix/Hulu/YT), i have tried the 250mbps, 100mbps before and the only time i noticed a difference is when i was downloading a new version of MacOS on the 25mb it took, obviously, longer than what I used to

if your router graphs your line utilisation (eg: Mikrotik) you'll notice how seldom things go above a solid 20mbps for long. only if you're downloading large files all the time or have more than 3 or 4 HD (2x 4K) streams going at the same time then I guess it might be necessary - streaming is often in bursts, despite places saying you need 25mbps for 4k i haven't seen 4k hit that as a constant.

Even with fibre, I still occasionally limit upload speeds to keep the network stable, In-app for Sync apps or here for Chrome:

Prevents big uploads killing the connection.
