In light of that I understand it's not representative of the norm, but also that I have far more Apple kit in my house than the average.
iPhone5S's come from way back when obviously when I was still on contracts and didn't cost me anything as my company paid for it at the time.
iPad 2 I had a friend brings two along when flying back from the UK before they officially launched here and I seem to remember being R4000-R5000 a pop.
iPhone 11 I bought cash via Carbonite as I was in a bit of a pickle changing jobs so it was technically second hand but sealed brand new I want to say for R10,000 just over two years ago, so in perspective of contracts R400-ish a month and getting cheaper every month as I'll use it another two years at least.
iPhone 8 bought from Takealot December 13 December 2017 at 13,499 which actually makes me feel better about what I thought was outrageous pricing on the new ones seeing in in perspective now. So as a contract conversion and cost over time R275 a month. Once I get the wife a new phone I'll probably change the battery and then it will keep living on another few years.
Apple TV's I bought both via eBucks and 40% off in one way or another. I think the oldest one I bought at Makro with 40% off voucher and the newer 4K one I bought off the eBucks store directly. I want to say in real money it was R2999 for the Apple TV because I stupidly decided I needed the bigger one, which was in restrospect a waste. I turned my dumb TV into a very smart one which was worth it. The Apple TV 4K I did not need and bought out of sheer excess because of eBucks and discount and paid R1,799 for it. My LG OLED is pretty Smart and I could happily have lived without it but I wanted the unity of the two lounges having the exact same experience and of course the extras of Airplay and access to Apple Music etc which is great considering it's "free". In retrospect I would probably pay real money for it.
2 x AirPods Pro were R2,699 each again in eBucks after discount. These I would happily buy at full price with real money as they were a life changing experience with Covid and working from home and all that.
1 x AirPods R1,494 were for my wife before the Pros and did the job and I actually resold them again for a R1,000.
Apple Watch Series 3 38mm R3,407 on 14 August 2018 again on eBucks and not real money. This was purely a let's see what the fuss is about purchase. At the time being a motorcyclist I hadn't worn a watch in years due to it being problematic with gloves and so it was literally a test drive. I ended up liking it and being quite surprised at the benefits of having Siri on my wrist which I use all the time.
Apple Watch Series 5 44mm R5,159 on 21 October 2019 once again with eBucks, not sure if there was discount involved or just a good price. The option came along and I decided I liked the idea of the bigger watch experience by then and my wife was keen to just take over the smaller one so I took the plunge. I should add that while I never considered the Apple Watch a necessary device my mind changed over time but I don't consider it something that needs frequent upgrading and if I had the larger Series 3 I'd likely still be using it. Same reason I don't have a newer one right now as there isn't really much to justify it.
HomePods I bought one of those crazy events where someone made a mistake with their discount promotions, I think it was Superbalist and applied it to a whole category of things and I had like 5 minutes to pick up a bargain before it expired. Being a parallel import the standard pricing was mental but the discount was for R1,999 and this about lined up with importing it myself so I took the plunge. Quite likely paid for it with eBucks as well. Later on I bought two more with real money and imported myself and they were about R2,200 each landed here. These were kind of frivolous spending items after SARS rebates and having money in hand and I wouldn't call them essential but certainly nice to have and would love to get more to have one for each of my kids as well.
MacBook Pro is a 2017 I paid R6500 for as it was my work machine and we retire them after 3 years and you get the first option to buy them. It's a policy we have to incentivise people to look after stuff as if it's their own because they can actually make it their own for very little money.
MacBook Pro M1 I'm typing this on right now is my work machine.
My second M1 is a test machine as well as some or other older iPad I'm not actually even sure what it is but has the Home button still but is on the latest iOS is also a test unit.
If I had to go out right now and purchase a machine for myself with my own money it would be a MacBook Air M1 as I don't think anyone really needs any more than that and it's a solid package all round.
I would love to get an iPad again but I despise the face that they are gatekeeping FaceID to the Pro models only and I can't justify that for myself but also can't work without FaceID so I'll wait until Apple eventually comes to the party with that one.

I never claimed Apple would be cheaper, I just objected with the 2-6 times equation when comparing like for like.
1.5x at best but usually not even that, also things go way beyond their base cost in hardware and when you take more of a five year view things change a lot.
With Family subscriptions and shared licensing and such it starts stretching a whole lot further than people thing. Especially when you've been in the system for over a decade.
