What the hell is a powerline extender?

It uses the power lines in your house to create a network. Plug in two of them into any sockets in your house that's on the same phase and DB board and they will connect to each other. Whatever you are networking connects to the eop's with lan cables.

I have had limited success with them even in one building with one DB.

We're in a newish house - about 15 years old. Single phase.

Powerline extenders FTW. 1 in downstairs office linked to router - sends to 1 with wi-fi in garage, 1 linked to a switch in lounge for AV equipment & media player, 1 in each of the bedrooms. Total cost under R3k. No ugly cables to be seen anywhere.

Right, you need 2 of them, plug both in on the same electricity cct, you will plug the Ethernet cable from 1 into the internet connection, on the other plug the Ethernet cable into the device you are going to use, It basically uses you existing electricity wiring as an Ethernet cable, some have wifi on the B side some do not,as for ping not 100% as reliable as running a direct Ethernet cable. depends on application.
