Hello All

Well ive done alot of research, mostly involving going through this forum post for post, but things are still unclear.

Im looking to get connected again for use in online gaming but ive got a few snags.

Currently I use my nokia through my laptop to check email and surf since my old laptop and PC got burgled last year. No im tired of the small screen and slow speed and want to get back to planet earth and join the human race.

So... I rent a garden cottage and I am allowed to get a telephone line. Problem is that roughly by the end of this year the landlord who rents the place will let me know that I have to leave due to the fact that the building will be demolished to make room for townhouses. And with the telkom waiting list of 8-16 days for a telephone line (R350+-) and 6-8 weeks for ADSL (R450+-) i dont think its worth the wait and cash to get ADSL. If I do the self install on the ADSL, then Ill more than likely wait longer...

Iburst? I live in a dip, so I dont think signal will be phenominal and gaming wont be fun...

3g? Now here is my headache.
Vodacom and MTN cost the same. But which should I take.
Will this be suitable for gaming?
Is there a contract/something which will allow me to get i.e. 1Gb for browsing etc and when I feel I need a extra 2Gb for gaming then I can go and buy a top up card?
You see i want to get a contract as Cash the modem is alot of money and I still need to buy my new computer.

So please help and tell me which option would be the best for me.

If it's gaming then ADSL unshaped is your best option bru. Self install is very quick especially if the exchange is ready. I waited 2 days. I'd say give it a go and order your phone line ... hopefully it will be quicker than 8-16 days. Just my opinion.

FPS = Negative. 3G not good enough.
RPG/Strat = Probably wont be a problem.

thanx for the reply guys. Ill have to check the costs involved.

You see in battlefield 2142 for instance, i played uses about 40Mbs per game (few hours of play) without voip and about 120mb with voip.

this is gonna be a tough desition.

question:

please explain the line speed and payment thing to me. Do i hire a 4mb telkom line, or is that up to my isp?

You can either pay telkom for the line and get your own ISP, or you can search around and get a converged service. What this means is you pay your ISP for the line as well as your data cap.
You shouldn't need more than a 512 line for BF 2142. Heck I am playing at 384kbps and as long as I don't have to contend with my brother for bandwidth I play smoothly.

Don't get a 24 month contract though if you decide to buy from telscum. Go for a month 2 month payment method. Alternatively wait for end of April when Neotel officially goes online for retail customers.
